We are Top Ranked!! Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, Inc. is a top ranked Dallas 501(c)3 nonprofit organization according to Charity Navigator.
Each year we partner with hardworking families and the community to build 75 homes, making Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity the largest nonprofit homebuilder and the sixth largest homebuilder overall in the City of Dallas, as well as the third largest Habitat affiliate in the United States. We are hope building machines!!
Studies have proven that children of homeowners have enhanced emotional and academic development, scoring 9% higher in math score and 7% higher in reading scores, regardless of parental socio-economic status.
Since our incorporation in 1986, Dallas Habitat and its contributors have built over 700 homes and served as a catalyst for the revitalization of 20 communities.
Who We Help
The need for affordable housing in Dallas is great. Over 100,000 households - more than 1/5 of the households in the City of Dallas – earn less than 50% of the Area Median Income. There is an estimated shortage of 30,000 affordable homes for families in this income range.
Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity provides affordable housing opportunities to families no other nonprofit or private mortgage lender in Dallas is able to serve. Our partner families must meet several criteria to qualify and earn 25-60% of the Average Median Family Income (AMI), or $16,625 - $39,990 for a family of four.
Qualified families are required to provide 400 hours of ‘sweat equity’ in lieu of a down payment, which is fulfilled by building their own home and the homes of other Habitat families. This hands-on participation builds new skills, a sense of accomplishment, and strong relationships with their neighbors.
To assist partner families in developing self-sufficiency, homeowners are also required to participate in Habitat’s Homebuyer Education Program, teaching the basics of home and yard maintenance, money management, and budgeting.
Through Dallas Habitat partner families are able to purchase a quality three or four bedroom home below cost with a 0% mortgage, providing them with a stable home, predictable payments, and the ability to save and build equity for their future.
There is no better way to celebrate your life than by giving others a reason to celebrate in their life too.
Who I'd like to meet:
VOLUNTEERS!!!!
Volunteering with Dallas Habitat is a great way to meet new friends and learn new skills.
There are many opportunities to become involved.
Core Volunteers:
Core Volunteer are the people who know how it works. They have oppertunities to build Monday through Saturday, committing at least one day per month, building 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., so they can gain experience after they complete volunteer training. Core volunteers are on build sites to help build and to help staff supervisors teach and train inexperienced volunteers.
Non-building Volunteers:
If you would like to volunteer in ways other than building, we have something for everyone! For those interested in volunteering as a group, please contact the following persons to discuss your interests in more detail.
Volunteer Services staff contact information:
Jennifer Knoeber, Director of Volunteer Services: 214-678-2315 or jknoeber@dallas-habitat.org
Melanie Crommett, Assistant Volunteer Coordinator: 214-678-2311 or mcrommett@dallas-habitat.org
Youth volunteers:
Under 14 years of age: not allowed on site during any phase of construction. Sorry. But thanks for your love.
14 and 15 year-olds: allowed to participate in landscaping and clean up near the end of the house build; must have one adult supervisor per youth.
16 and 17 year-olds: allowed to participate in construction but cannot get on the roof or operate power tools; must have one adult supervisor per 5 youth.
Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer-driven organization. We welcome people from all walks of life to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with deserving families.
Thank you very much for being part of the memorial page that I set up for Millard. Christmas time is a little different for us here in Americus, Georgia being that Millard is no longer with us. I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and to be able to plant a small seed of hope that next year (2010) will be a better year for you than this year was.
Just a short note to wish you a Merry Christmas and also to plant a small seed of hope that next year will be a better year for you than this year was.
Thank you very much for accepting my invitation for friendship. It is greatly appreciated. Someday, I'll have to ride through Dallas again and visit with you and possibly pound in a few nails.
