About me: I have been listening to music forever and a fan of metal for a long time. It started out innocently enough with some hard rock bands like Kiss, AC/DC, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, etc (I’ve enjoyed and seen more ‘80’s hair metal bands than I will ever admit)… In time that led to Metallica, Anthrax, Testament, Megadeth, and eventually Slayer. I remember picking up Napalm Death’s Scum when it first came out. I also saw Ripping Corpse back in the day at a hole in the wall club. Over time, I have only gotten more into metal and my tastes have evolved. I think a good analogy is a learned appreciation for fine spirits. You start out underage drinking whatever you get you hands on…mostly, bad and really, cheep canned stuff. As you grow up your tastes become more refined and you become a little more choosey about what you drink. You start to develop an taste for the good things. You understand the nuances of the flavor. You will find yourself drinking differently depending on your mood, accompanying food, the setting, and/or the atmosphere. Sometimes a light beer will do. Other times you want a sturdy lager to go with that steak. Alternatively, you may find yourself at an Italian restaurant wanting a glass of red wine. No matter what though, you want the good stuff. Other times you just need a good stiff shot. That is where I am at with metal. Like a good micro-brewed beer, I have found that the less popular, less accessible stuff is usually the better stuff. You might have to hunt, but in the end, it is worth it. I do not think there is any good metal put out by major labels these days. I think the best stuff is underground (I use that term loosely because it is subjective depending on who you are talking too). I would say that my first real metal love was thrash in the ‘80’s. It is really no surprise that I still love thrash. The obvious progression from there was death metal and that is what I still spend a lot of my time listening to and looking for. Since it is all about sub-genres, I have to say my favorites are the old school-style death metal bands, technical death, doom, sludge and stoner metal/rock. I really do not get the whole metalcore/mallcore/screamo-emo thing. The longish, unkempt hair parted on the side, with bangs covering one eye, too small t-shirts and girls jeans…real metal?…REAL gay! See ‘em at a show and they are either kick boxing with air or texting on their cell to all their friends about how cool it is to be where they are…are they even paying attention to the bands…oh right, that’s not the point is it. It’s about the irony of it all. I do not think many of the younger metalheads get it. I think it is the same reason you are seeing seasoned bands creating some of the best music of their careers. I think it is also the same reason my tastes have evolved with age. It is not really about age, but maturity. That is not to say there are not some young metalheads with excellent tastes, because there are (they are more mature than most their age). It seems like there are more and more really good bands coming out of areas of the world that are somewhat isolated from current trends and scenes and that is always a good thing.

I listen to more music now than at any other time in my life. I am lucky and I know it because I get to listen to it at my desk at work. I find myself listening almost exclusively to heavy music too (not necessarily metal, but always heavy). I used to listen to more variety, but not so much anymore. I still really appreciate and enjoy other types of music beside the heavy stuff. I am not a brooding person either. In fact, I have never been happier with my life. I have mellowed out and gained more patience and perspective. I used to have a fuse a millimeter long and a charge equal that of bunker buster. I have also never been more successful professionally and personally, funny how that works out. Coincidence? I think not. People can change especially if they allow themselves to be open to learning from their life experiences, both good and bad. If you do not you could easily self-destruct…I am talking from experience. I have settled down and have a little girl too. It does not slow me down though. I still go to shows when I can, to see bands I really like. I will travel to see ‘em too. I think you probably get the point. ___________________________________________________
About me? Besides all that? I like photography. I especially like outdoor scenery and concert photography. I am getting better all the time. I also really enjoy cooking. My favorite chefs are Emeril, Mario and Jasper White (chowda man). I don’t watch too much TV and do not read nearly as much as I wish I did. Discovery Channel, TLC, Food Network and the Travel Channels are best. Sitcom reruns from 4-8pm are like an addiction and have always been for me. I never seem to get into these shows when they are on prime time, but rerun ‘em and in the evenings and I am there. I would be embarrassed to mention some of the stuff I enjoy. Guilty pleasures for sure. I like Survivor and The Biggest Loser (is there a more inspirational and motivational show on network television?). Other than those two, network reality and game shows make me sick. MTV? No use for it. Fuse sucks too. I would love to watch more horror movies, but my better half does not like them one bit. Makes it hard you know? Compromise is a good thing though. It has led me to both appreciate Audrey Hepburn and Mary J. Blige and want to commit suicide by jumping off our second floor deck after watching Will Smith in “The Pursuit of Happyness” (it’s not even spelled right). Lastly, as I approach 40, I have finally decide to stop talking and start doing, starting with my desire to learn to play and instrument. My instrument of choice is the almighty, low and slow, bass.

I guess that is enough. Probably more than you wanted to know “about me” if you are reading this.

A few things I have learned along the way (some may be clich, but all of them are true):
Love life.
Make sure the ones you love know what they mean to you.
No one is perfect.
You will make mistakes.
Foolish are those who do not learn from their mistakes.
Be patient.
You get what you give.
Learn to forgive.
Like yourself and others will like you.
What does not kill you really will make you stronger.
Anger and hate are a waste of time and energy.
You may never get a second chance, but if you do, use it wisely.
Do not ever give up.
Know when to give in.
Do not be afraid to ask for help.
Do not be afraid to help yourself by empowering yourself.
Change yourself because you want to, not because others want you to.
Accept others for who they are.
Do not get caught up in who they are not.
Learn to accept responsibility.
Be willing to admit when you make a mistake.
Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.
Actions speak louder than words.

I was fortunate to be a staff songwriter for Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton's Owepar Publishing Company at the height of their duet run of seven number one albums on RCA Records! While on their staff, Wagoner produced a progressive underground project of my music, which is my current release on the Collectibles Label titled "Real American Country."
Please have a listen to the project which demonstrates that Porter Wagoner could rock! If you have time, please shoot me some feedback! http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/1702368
