Why chocolate is good for Parkinson's
Could dark chocolate help people with Parkinson's disease?
In a new trial, doctors are looking at the effect dark chocolate has on the shaking movements associated with the condition.
It follows research showing that Parkinson's patients eat more dark chocolate than those without the disease.
It is thought this might be because it is a form of self-medication. Parkinson's is caused by a loss of nerve cells in the part of the brain responsible for producing dopamine, the chemical that helps transmit messages to control and coordinate body movement.
If these nerve cells become damaged, the amount of dopamine is reduced and the messages to the body become slow and abnormal.
German researchers believe compounds in dark chocolate, such as phenylethylamine, increase levels of dopamine. Credits: Daily Mail
