Damerels was formed in the autumn of 2006 by The Thomas Arms and Allister as a way to entertain themselves while finishing a bottle of Laphroaig 10yr old malt whiskey. This is not conjecture.
Their first song was written that night, and may or may not have contained lyrics based on the contents of the room. Yet, despite its infantile state, the idea of the band sparked a notion that punk-rock could be brought back to basics in an exterme way. The seed was sown, and within a week Damerels performed for the first time with only one song, one guitar, one tambourine and two bellies full of fire. The style was everything the Stooges ever were, everything the White Stripes showed was possible, and as loud as the two combined.
After playing every open mic in the city, very often off the cuff, the decision was made to take it to the next level and the search began for a drummer to nestle in to the fold. An advert was placed in a music shop, hand-written on borrowed paper, and nailed to the notice board. One person answered the call within 30 minutes, one brave soul who thought he was up to the challenge. His style was perfect, a mixture of heavy beats, lavish flurries and not a care in the world for drum solos. He was told to drum hard, and has since proved there really is no other way to play drums. The spooky part is, the notice stayed up in the music shop for a month, forgotten by the band who had found their third member, and yet he was the one and only person to call. First time lucky.
So the pressure was on to create an overall sound that complemented, and made best use of, the meagre number of instruments available. The guitars were thickened, reinforced, down-tuned, re-strung with a mixture of bass-guage strings and regular electric guages, and given an old-school punk twist. The vocals were enriched with distortion that added complex variety to the poetic nature of the lyrics, and what became was the original sound that had always been strived for. It also made for a very unusual but exciting live spectacle which has recieved many flattering comments on the fullness of the sound produced by so few tangible elements. Pride was at stake when the decision was made to keep the band as bare as possible, and that has paid off, most notably with a soon to be released EP on Fury 76 records.
