Influences
Neil Peart (RUSH), Carter Beauford (The Dave Matthews Band), Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins), Chris Layton (Stevie Ray Vaughn), Boris Williams (The Cure), Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix)
I started playing drums when I was ten years old. My fascination with the drums dates back to grade school, with my music teacher Mr. Edson who first introduced me to Neil Peart and the band RUSH. My mother and aunt bought me my first drum set straight off the stage of the Grande Ole Opry as a Christmas present. Yet it was not until I was 14 when I got into my first band with friends. In the nine years between I basically jammed with friends. It was during these nine years when my musical tastes broadened to different styles of music. Influenced by the likes of Neil Peart (RUSH), Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins), Chris Layton (Stevie Ray Vaughn), Boris Williams (The Cure), Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix) and the incredible Carter Beauford (The Dave Matthews Band).
In 1993 I got into my first actual band called the Shrooms. The band was comprised of friends Scott, Jorge, Chuck, and Ryan. The band played around for a couple of years in which the Thirsty Whale was of our favorites places to play. In 1994 I got a call to try out for a band called Wave Estate, which played mainly covers and they were interested in writing and recording new material. Well, since then I have been playing drums and writing lyrics and music with the band Wave Estate. During that same time period I played in numerous other bands, including The Paula Mengarelli Band, Dirty Dan Buck & The Boyzz, Brother Zero, Liquid Blue, and The Blenders. This lead to the learning many different styles of playing from Rock to Blues to Pop to Motown and even Country. It was during the time playing with the Paula Mengarelli Band which lead to many summer festivals including two consecutive appearances at The Taste of Chicago and a television appearance on WGN's morning show. The Paula Mengarelli Band even received a letter from the President of the United States of America, George W. Bush, for a song that was given to him in tribute to September 11th which was written by The Paula Mengarelli Band. Thanks Paula!
Into the present: Since 2003 I have been playing with The Blind Roosevelts with a short stint in 2004 playing with The Blenders. The Blind Roosevelts consist of Don Mills, Gary Enerson, Bill Pitts, Jimmy Perrino and ME. I have been playing in and out of the band for over 7 years and I finally permanently joined in 2003. Over the past few years we have played many really great places like McNallys (My personal favorite), Pub 222, Paytons Roundhouse, Synergy, Duke O'Briens, Quiglys, Ave Ale House, and Lamp Lighters. We also have played at many outdoor festivals like South Elgin's Riverfest, Gilbert's Fest, Justice's concert in the park, Lilly's (Pheasant Run), Prairie Rock Brewery, Bannerman’s Sport Bar, Governors Public House, O'Brien's Pub, and Jersey's.
I have been writing for not quite as long as I have been playing, but I love it still the same. I have written lyrics for a CD that was released back in the spring of 2000. While I was playing with the Paula Mengarelli Band the band was progressing up the Indie charts. The first CD was well received which was how the band was picked up by Comstock Records. Great American Country was the first release upon signing with Comstock Records. The single was played in numerous markets all over the world. The single hit number one in Holland and Australia. The singles Heart Healing Music and No One Ever Died of a Broken Heart were released with the same acceptance. Currently, The Blind Roosevelts have recorded a demo CD containing 5 cover songs along with 4 originals. The writing and recording of new material is next of the list for the Roosevelts.
