That was the entire point of the mentioning being deprived of food. Ramadan is fasting during the daytime. It also includes abstaining from sex, and a few other things. One night time hits, the fast is over til morning. The fact that they were deliberately deprived of food during the night time is a blatant attack on their beliefs to try to force them into needing to eat during the day.
