In general, I have LOTS of interests! *LOL* But to sum up a few of the highlights that might give you a sense of who I am: photography, listening to and collecting music (primarily hard rock & heavy metal), computers & technology, genealogy & history (especially ancient Egyptian, Roman & Greek), home theater, collecting (antique cameras, stamps & coins, in addition to my music/movie/memorabilia collecting), attending live comedy shows, learning new things, exploring new places with my camera, helping others whenever possible, and trying to just do my small part to make the world a better place in general.
Music
My favorite band of all time is Judas Priest. To me, nobody can top them at their peak:
Best concert I've ever attended (to date) was Judas Priest, with Slayer opening, in 1988 in Portland on the last night of the Ram It Down tour. Simply perfect in every way that night!
Close second, though, was L7, with Love Battery and 7 Year Bitch opening, at a small club (La Luna) in Portland in 1993.
Third best show I've seen was Judas Priest, with Dokken opening, at the Coliseum in Spokane in 1986.
Second favorite band is AC/DC:
Third favorite is Led Zeppelin:
The lip synching is atrocious and hysterical, but this video sums up my musical interest perfectly:
And now for a couple of local, present day, favorites. First up is a simply amazing AC/DC cover band, Hell's Belles (www.hellsbelles.info):
Last, but certainly not least...some new music which sounds exactly like it's straight out of the 80's metal heyday, Zero Down (www.zerodownrocks.com)! Great, great band...
Movies
Top three favorites (in order) are:
The Terminator
Aliens
The Road Warrior
...but I have many other favorites including: 300, Terminator 2, Blade Runner, Alien, Rollerball (original 1975 version), Die Hard, Live Free or Die Hard, the Bourne trilogy, Sin City, and even Titanic (yes, I know...doesn't seem to quite fit in with the others, does it?), to name a few...
Television
Top three shows (in order): The Apprentice, America's Next Top Model and a tie between Charm School and The Pickup Artist. Not! Just kidding on those last two... In the third position would actually be most any show from Investigation Discovery or The History Channel.
Books
I'm not really a book reader (I prefer magazines, newspapers, and technical manuals), so instead, here are some of my favorite quotes:
"Common sense isn't all that common." -- Voltaire
"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that." -- George Carlin
"Dee dee dee" -- Carlos Mencia
"Here's your sign..." -- Bill Engvall
"There's only been one person who was perfect, and look what happened to him..." -- Unknown
"We are all ignorant, just on different subjects." -- Will Rogers
"Imagine what you could do if you could do all you imagine." -- Dennis Erskine
"The photographer makes the camera, the camera does not make the photographer" -- Unknown
"The more equipment you take, the fewer pictures you'll take." -- Jay Maisel
"Making people look like the rockstars they are..." -- Dan Stone (me)
"If it's too loud, just put in earplugs! You're never too old (to rock)..." -- Dan Stone (me)
"I'm (x + 1).0 in an x.0 world!" -- Dan Stone (me)
"Photography at the speed of music..." -- Dan Stone (me)
Heroes
My parents, Leonardo da Vinci and Benjamin Franklin are probably my top three/four. The common denominator being that they are all highly intelligent, skilled at many different things, and set the bar high with good examples for all of us to follow.
My parents have been extremely supportive of me, no matter what, over the course of my whole life. I could not have asked for any better parents and role models, and I would not trade them for anything. Several of my friends have wished they had been their parents! I'm very grateful, and fortunate, to be their son.
Also, can't forget to mention Wile E. Coyote...the second most creative genius I know! : - D
"Making people look like the stars they are..." Photography of all kinds (except porn/hardcore), but specializing in band, concert, people, urban, and landscape photography. See more at my website (www.danstonephotography.com).
"Making people look like the (rock)stars they are..."
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and have a look around. Photography is my passion, and the above two quotes are what I strive to make the essence of how I express myself through my concert photos (which is the primary focus of this page. My scenic and landscape work is presented more in depth on my website - www.danstonephotography.com).
Here's a little about me:
I grew up in Montesano, Washington, where I went to school with some future world famous musicians. Buzz Osborne of The Melvins was two years ahead of me, Mike Dillard (original Melvins drummer) and Matt Lukin (original Melvins bass player and later bass player in Mudhoney) were a year ahead of me, and Kurt Cobain was a year behind me. Buzz's brother Scott was in my class, and John and Dan Raymond (who have done merchandising on some of the Melvins tours) went to our school as well. The Melvins used to play at some of our high school dances, and I remember when Buzz brought in his guitar and amp, cranked the amp up to full, and proceeded to perform a jam at lunch (including The Star Spangled Banner) until the principal finally came down and put a stop to the impromptu show.
I started being interested in photography in 1976, by wanting to have some photos of the US Bicentennial, and hiring my aunt (for just the cost of the film, I seem to recall) to take photos of what I asked her to record that day. After getting my first camera (a Kodak instamatic) for Christmas that year, I furthered my interest in taking photos by becoming one of our school yearbook photographers for several years. I actually took this picture of Kurt, in eighth grade playing drums, for the yearbook. It later appeared in the book Rolling Stone published on him shortly after his death, although they miskeyed the caption as him being in the fifth grade.

After high school, I went on to study photography in a three-year program at Spokane Falls Community College, although professionally I've spent my working career as a salesperson for the past fifteen years. These days, I like to photograph a variety of subjects, although landscapes and illustrative portraits are particular favorites. My landscape work includes both scenes of natural scenic beauty (including clouds and sunsets) and what I like to refer to as urban landscapes (downtown city scenes, including night scenes and photos of abandoned/rundown structures).
"Night Prowler" and "The Rover" musically sum me up perfectly, as not only are AC/DC and Led Zeppelin a couple of my favorite bands, but I have always been a night person when given the choice, and I love to just grab my camera and wander around taking pictures of whatever happens to grab my attention at the time.
While I've posted a bit of my band photography here on My Space, as well as some fun photos with friends, my main photography portfolio is located at www.danstonephotography.com.
While not worksafe, due to numerous F-bombs, this is an EXTREMELY FUNNY guide to the rules of heavy metal music, from the creative and hilarious minds at Fur TV:
I'd be interested in meeting anyone who is reading this. In the course of my photography work, I get to meet lots of people, some famous, many more not so famous. These connections are the lifeblood of what I do, and every one is just as important, and meaningful, as the next. So never think I wouldn't be interested in meeting you, or talking with you, or feel intimidated about approaching me, if you happen to see me out and about taking photos somewhere. I may not always have an unlimited amount of time to speak with you indepth, at that very moment, but I'd love to at least say hi, and get a chance to chat with you more in depth later, when both of our schedules allow. Be sure to ask me to get a photo or two, as well, of you with your friends at the event/show we're attending! I'm always happy to get a quick photo or two, or sometimes even several, of anybody who asks.
I'm especially interested in meeting other creative people, of all types, who would like to collaborate on creating great photographic art. This includes models, clothing stylists, makeup artists, hair stylists, graphic designers/artists, image editing/manipulation gurus, and even other photographers (both experienced or aspiring, in all these cases, as I have no problem, or reservation about, working with any skill/experience level), who share my concept of creative collaboration. I really enjoy the brainstorming and concept creation process (especially when a team of focused individuals are all focusing their efforts on the same creative collaborative project), the challenge of bringing unique and inspiring visions to life, and capturing it all in visually arresting images.
If you have any ideas, even if they may seem far fetched, don't hesitate to contact me if you think our visions may complement each other. About the only thing I have no interest in photographing is hardcore porn.
If you have something you'd like me to photograph, or there's an event/show you think I'd be interested in, please don't hesitate to send me an email at danstonephotography'at'me.com (replace 'at' with @). If you happen to see me out shooting photos somewhere, feel free to come up and say hello, and even ask to get a couple photos of you and those you're with.
Lastly, here are my current, unfulfilled, top dream photoshoots: Joan Jett (on location shoot and/or photopass to cover a full live show), London and the Look, Mary Magdalan, Sanaz, Kat Von D, Rob Halford (solo or with Judas Priest), Eddie Van Halen (solo or with DLR fronted version of band), AC/DC, Motley Crue, Lita Ford, Lorraine Lewis/Roktopuss, Slayer, Ozzy (solo or with Black Sabbath), present day Led Zeppelin version that's going to tour, Sex Pistols, and KISS. If any of you happen to see this, and are interested in setting something up, let me know! Thanks in advance.
