With his Black Keys bandmate Patrick Carney, Auerbach has recorded five critically acclaimed full-length albums, beginning with 2002’s The Big Come Up. In 2008, Attack & Release debuted on the Billboard Top 200 chart at 14, marking The Black Keys’ highest position to date. The New York Times called it a “savage, bitter concoction built on a snarling punk-rock riff,” while the Los Angeles Times called it “without doubt the Keys’ most dynamic effort yet.” Auerbach also has been busy with his own record label, Polymer Sounds, for which he produced the 2008 debut from Jessica Lea Mayfield, With Blasphemy, So Heartfelt; Pitchfork praised Mayfield’s album as “fascinating and endlessly listenable.”

"He's created not a Black Keys film noir, but his own kind of film — a melodrama with mellow humor, a mood piece about a hero who feels most comfortable delivering monologues in the dark, sitting on the side of a motel bed, looking out at a cold parking lot and a warm, full moon"

" I can hear Neil Young in there, and I can hear Tom Waits in there. The blues are always present, but it feels like a songwriter’s record"
Nic Harcourt
"Keep It Hid often sounds as if sprung from a psychedelic vault...But the album doesn’t quite feel retro or especially arcane...The tone of the songs is dark...but their effect is rousing"

Due to a death in the family, Bob Cesare won't be hitting the road with Dan, instead being replaced by the thunder that is Patrick Hallahan of My Morning Jacket. They're holed up at Akron Analog Studio to rehearse before their first show this Saturday (2/28) at The 9:30 Club in DC
Keep It Hid moves up to 4 on this week’s CMJ top 200 chart
The Village Voice, February, 24, 2009
"Dan Auerbach, the singing and guitaring Black Key, never needs a band with his main gig. But the breadth of his solo joint Keep It Hid, with its blues-psych syrup brewed from intuitive touches of analog fuzz, parlor organ, and other voices supporting his own hardwood Midwestern keen, further establishes Auerbach as a dude with the vision to reach beyond the boundaries of a blues rock duo and Bonnaroo beard. Frailties are in play, as are demons, destruction, and the blood of his Akron, Ohio home. Get drenched"

"Auerbach has made a deeply personal piece that goes into dusty corners never explored by the Keys...he is a master at creating surprising, shadowy textures with reverb and repeated riffs"

"He’s a gifted songwriter, and his experience behind the microphone lends a melodic anchor to his guitar riffs, which blister and burn but rarely muddle their hooks in waves of amplified skuzz"

"Keep It Hid offers further evidence that the music Dan Auerbach has so obviously, and voraciously, absorbed makes him who he is, pure and simple"

"He has the ability to unleash passion and anger through his playing, creating a rock'n'roll aesthetic that is defined not by its purity, but rather the soulfulness and essential fun of pure, drone-heavy electric blues” - By Alan McGee (founder of Creation Records, who managed The Jesus and Mary Chain, and helped mold the careers of My Bloody Valentine & Teenage Fanclub) Click to read the whole article

This is heavy rock with it's roots still evident: shades of gospel and soul, even bluegrass...It's redemption, heaven, and rebirth, though not necessarily in that order.
