Just myself, Dan Dover (Three-D to some), Songwriter, Guitar and Vocal.
Influences
It was John Prine and Steve Goodman who first showed me the way to songwriting. I am also influenced (like 99% of you) by Bob Dylan and the Beatles. I have also learned from Tom Russell, David Alvin, Dave Carter, David Francey, Jackson Browne, the Eagles, Jeffery Foucault and countless others.
Sounds Like
I am not sure if I sound like anyone else except to the extent that my influences show. In that case, I sound like a lot of different artists.
I am a 50 something singer-songwriter living in Portland, Oregon. I have been playing guitar for over 30 years (but you cannot tell by listening) and have been writing all my life. I wrote my first songs in 1974 and still play some of those. I have written a couple of hundred songs and discarded most of them over time. I really love music of all kinds but am most involved with contemporary folk (whatever that means) and Americana.
I am also a religious skeptic but I do not really address that in my music. If I had a religion it would have to be 'Seven Day Hedonism' as the only unadulterated good that I know of is pleasure. However, the intelligent hedonist is much like the intelligent ethical-egoist. If I think the only good is what is good for me I will behave exactly like the nominally 'altruistic' as I must act in ways that return the greatest good to myself. If I act selfishly, like an ignorant ethical-egoist, I will engender a back lash against my interests that will decrease my personal good. Likewise, an intelligent hedonist will act in ways that increase his total life pleasure. So, enlightened Seven Day Hedonism for me.
So for me, music, food, and sensuality rules.
Hey Dan, how're things going? Give me a call sometime! I've got three new songs that I just recorded LIVE! at the Airplay Cafe. Let me know what you think. Cheers!
