A good example of a standard for microcomputer word processors' is certainly Microsoft Word for Macintosh and then later Windows and also what was once Corel WordPerfect for Macintosh. However, even before these two programs became a type of “unofficial” De facto standard,
there were other vendors offering early versions,
such as Apple Writer or WordStar, which both sold millions of copies to become a standard for word processing due to a new market niche at the time.
In most all cases, the software companies themselves only supported their word processor for a certain number of years. Furthermore, the various popular operating systems and platforms running software help determine the "de facto" standard in use by a certain majority of data processing users. This same premise can be applied to the two most popular, common and well tested operating systems for office and home use.
Of course,
Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X Leopard &
Microsoft Corporation's Windows VISTA are both standards. However, because the original Intel chip based PC’s far outsell Apple PC’s the industry has proven Windows as the emerged "de facto" standard for operating systems.
Considering universal serial ports for a minute, USB has now become the “common” industry standard for connectivity on all types of PC’s and consumer electronics. A "serial" port was one of the basic external connectors on a microcomputer. Originally, the primary use of a high-speed serial port was to connect a modem to your computer and provide binary data communications between two remote PC’s. This “de jure” standard port type has been replaced by the newer Universal Serial Bus standard. In 1994, USB was envisioned as a universal serial PC port. The USB 1.0 specification was officially released in 1996. This is an official “de jure” standard developed by a non-profit group called USB Implementers Forum, Apple first embraced this USB standard in their late 1997 iMac. Microsoft also adopted full USB support for their Windows OS. Today, the USB 2.0 standard competes with the IEEE-1394 “Firewire” port as two very different standards for fast serial bus data transfers.
Firewire is a high-speed serial data bus conceived & invented by Apple Computer in the late 1980’s and further standardized by the IEEE 1394 Working Group in 1995.
The Firewire connector bus is a non-proprietary method of interconnecting hundreds of different consumer and pro digital A-V devices.
It is a “de jure” standard that competes with other peripheral standards. The IEEE computer society is a body within the IEEE that standardized the IEEE 1394-1995 and ratified it in 1995. An updated 1394a-2000 was approved in March 2000, becoming Firewire800.
IEEE 1394b has achieved certification with speeds up to 1,600 Mbps and 3,200 Mbps as a future standard for Firewire/iLINK.
The term “network interface card”, or NIC for short, is an adapter that interfaces any computer or electronic device to a network system. Most all NICs plug somewhere into a computer’s internal/ext. system bus. The “de facto” standard for most NICs today has become Ethernet based. Historically, vendors have produced NICs to conform to the OSI “7 layer” model for computer networks where a NIC operates at layer two (2).
Bob Metcalfe and D.R. Boggs invented Ethernet in 1972. “
De jure” standards based on their work were established in 1980 with the introduction of the IEEE 802.3 specifications. This required vendors to build their Ethernet products, network interfaces and cables to the specs dictated by the IEEE body.
This standardization has created Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet which can transmit cabled data up to 1,000 Mbps from NIC to NIC, i.e. 10/100/1000.
Finally, official standards are always being updated. Any organization such as the IEEE may publish a draft of improvements for some standardized technology. Reviews by committees are made for the updated specifications and other developers, companies, governments or members may participate. The organization or standards body will examine the final draft before it freely publishes the reviewed or updated standards.

"Morrison named his band after Blake’s phrase ‘the Doors of Perception’, and made the Blakean statement: “Those who make their peace with authority BECOME authority.” Curiously, Blake himself went even further, writing: “I must Create a System, or be Enslaved by another Man’s.” Like Martin Luther and the Bronze Age prophet Zoroaster before him, William Blake dared to reject the established religious order, supporting Herman Melville’s assertion that “only the man who says ‘no’ is free”
