Dan Duval, an up and coming guitarist and composer, has been collaborating regularly with cutting edge jazz musicians in the Pacific Northwest since 2002. His sound is an exciting infusion of the various jazz, rock, avant-garde, world music, and other styles that he has studied.
Prior to his arrival here in the foggy northwest, he studied at Boston's Berklee College of Music for two years, and way back before that, he grew up in California's San Jose Bay Area, just a stone's throw from thriving metropolitan cities like Berkley, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz. After studying music intensely in high school, and making locally significant accomplishments as a performer during his teens, Duval followed in the footsteps of a keyboard player friend of his whom he idolized at the time, and enrolled at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music. The city and the school both presented Duval with vast amounts of culture, resources, and miscellaneous urban and metropolitan trappings. After soaking up as much as possible for two years, the now seasoned guitarist and composer made his way west to the constantly growing music scene in Portland, Oregon.
Since getting established in Stumptown, Duval has worked with a veritable who's-who of rising Portland jazz stars, and a handful of established older players. At various times he's crossed musical paths with the likes of Chris Mosley, Dan Gaynor, Tim Willcox, Bill Athens, Todd Bishop, Ken Ollis, Mary-Sue Tobin, Willie Matheis, Farnell Newton, Darrel Grant, Mary Kadderly, Drew Shoals, Andrew Oliver, Dan Gildea, Jerry Hahn, John Nastos, Ryan Dolliver, Eric Gruber, Robert Moore, David Valdez, Ben Darwish, Sam Howard, and many others.
Duval is currently a member of the Andrew Oliver Sextet, one of the hardest working and most inventive young jazz groups in town. With one album of original material already under their belt, they are heading back into the studio in August of 2009 to record their sophomore effort. Over the last three years, they have developed an extremely cohesive and exciting sound which is both highly advanced and totally accessible.
