Danielle Dubois is one of the few young artists today who can successfully and artfully combine multiple genres with one single track, bridging gaps between culture and time. A native Californian, she began singing jazz at sixteen, as the protégé of a local jazz singer and continued for years playing at some of the finest jazz venues of Northern California. With those experiences under her belt, she embarked on a culture-based musical odyssey to explore especially the musical genres of Brasil and French-speaking West Africa. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The development of her own sound began while visiting Brasil at eighteen and performing in various clubs in São Paulo with artist Fabrício Miguel. She then lived in Sénégal, West Africa for seven months and was given the name Soukeyna by her new family and friends. She was then invited by keyboard player Amadou Hadj or "Vieux" and by the all-star group, FALLOU DIENG AND THE DLC, to tour throughout Sénégal and into Gambia, performing for crowds of over 4,000 people at some venues including the Minister of State of Gambia. Her second trip to Brasil was fruitful as Danielle’s original style further took form, meeting Brazilian pop-star Maurício Manieri who coached and encouraged her. When she returned, she began recording and performing with an Oakland-based Hip-Hop group, the International Loose Cannons. With them, she opened for/shared stage with such artists as Lyrics Born, Zion-I, Oh No, Hierogyphics, Ryan Greene and the Golden Shelltoes, Brother Ali, Co-Deez and Delinquent Monastery among others. She continues to collaborate with ILC members to this day and will always rep this crew. Check out her folks JAMIE WAY, a founding member of ILC, and CHRIS LEE of Norway (also an ILC member who was just nominated for a 2007 MTV Europe award), both worldwide hip-hoppers, as well as The Party Crashers, also made up of ILC members. Danielle is featured on Jamie Way's tracks "Lifestyles" featuring Deuce Eclipse, "Art of Confusion" and "Tomorrow" from his recently released full-length album. She also has recorded several tracks for ZEN CITY RECORDS on their 2005 LP release ELECTRIC ZEN, with DJ Paul Hemming in SF, CA. Now at age twenty-five, Danielle emerges into the public eye with a four-song EP debut Love Climbs which accurately portrays the blend of styles and cultures that inspire her most. She maneuvers easily from a classic samba to classic soul, from singing in Portuguese to English or French, and delivers an energetic, clear tone that is strong, sensual and smooth. LOVE CLIMBS EP was produced at Ursa Minor Arts + Media in San Rafael, CA by amazing engineer ROBIN LIVINGSTON and DANIELLE DUBOIS. All vocals and lyrics are done by Danielle Dubois; guitar, drums, cuica and various percussion by JASON BODLOVICH; bass, URIAH DUFFY (LYRICS BORN)(Wakhale); upright bass (Quando Voce Chega) TAYLOR CUTCOMB;keyboards, Hammond, drum programming and bass by ROBIN LIVINGSTON; and various percussion (pandeiro, surdo, tamborim+) by ALEXANDRE CALATAYUD. Samples on Wakhale were recorded by Danielle Dubois from SAM THIAM of the Fallou Dieng group on the talking drum (tama) and MALAMINE DIABATE(vocal sample) in Banjul, Gambia and Dakar, Senegal.
