"I suppose I have a highly developed capacity for self-delusion, so it's no problem for me to believe I'm somebody
else."

“You don't merely give over your creativity to making a film -- you give over your life! In theatre, by contrast,
you live these two rather strange lives simultaneously; you have no option but to confront the mould on last night's
washing-up.”

“The thing about performance, even if it's only an illusion, is that it is a celebration of the fact that we do contain
within ourselves infinite possibilities.”
"This is the place that sustains me, the place where I planted myself. "When the work is done, it's to this place
that I return to as a refuge. It's a place where I feel the freedom to lie fallow if I need to for a period of
time."

- During the filming of "Gangs of New York", Daniel was listening to Eminem to get into an angry frame of mind
best fitting for Bill the
Butcher; during lunch breaks, he'd sharpen his knives.
- He turned down the role of Aragorn in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy several times.
- Following 1997's "The Boxer", he underwent semi-retirement and returned to his old passion of woodworking,
which led to apprenticing as a
shoemaker.
- Although many websites report that Rebecca and Daniel met at her father's house while Daniel was meeting with
her dad about the movie production of The Crucible, Rebecca said in an interview that they met in 1995. "I sent the
script to Daniel way back in 1995. I arranged a screening of Angela for him, which he loved. That was how we
ended up meeting - to talk about the film. From that meeting came all the rest of our relationship." They were
married in a private ceremony in Vermont on November 13, 1996.
- During 1992's "The Last of the Mohicans", he built a canoe, learned to track and skin animals and perfected the
use of a 12-pound flintlock gun, which
he took everywhere he went, even to a Christmas dinner.
