Dan Haley was born in Brooklyn, raised in Wisconsin, and landed in Portland, Oregon in 1976, where he stayed for the next 21 years. He studied music theory and jazz at Mount Hood Community College and formed Ed & The Boats in 1980 with founding members Dennis Kenny (vox), Steve Costanzo (harmonica/sax), Greg Newman (bass), and Robert Carpenter (drums). The lineup over the next 12 years included Barry Jo Stull, Tara Richards (drums), Les York (drums), Steve Rothe (keys, guitar), Peter Bosen (keys), Bob Weadle (guitar), S.P. Clarke (keys) and Becky Kapelle (vox). In 1988 Lisa Lepine (Promotion Queen) joined as manager of the group. The last 4 years the band's core members were Dan, Denis, Greg and Randy, who released the CD "Live the Dream" in 1992.
Ed & The Boats shared the stage with Camper Van Beethoven, Live, and The Pretenders. They released several cassettes (including Six by Five, Inner Groove, Dear Anvil and 6-Way Street), a vinyl 45 containing "Ganga" and "Zoom to the Maya", and a vinyl EP "Go Fish". The Boats' song "Me & My Car" was featured in the 1992 Harrod Blank film "Wild Wheels" about crazy art cars. In 1992 the group released the cd "Live the Dream", which is available on here on cd baby. Ed & The Boats were a major fixture in Portland, having toured the west coast and briefly in New England as well, where they are remembered fondly.
Back in the day you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting someone Dan Haley was playing with:Billy Kennedy, Tommy Toast & The Hot Jams, Petty Cash (Janet Julian, Francis Regan et al.), Mike Danner, Jimmy Boyer, Little Sue, Lynn Conover, Connie Cohen, The Prairie Dogs (with Bingo a.k.a. Kevin Ritchie), The Rainworms, Earl Benson, and so many others. Dan opened for Townes Van Zandt and played with Skip Batten of the Byrds; he released several solo albums including the 1984 "Cream of Anxiety Soup" and 1993's "Fool's Mate".
In 1997 Dan left for Europe, where he toured around Germany with his folk project The Rails, with Mike Blackner and Annett Volpe. The Rails released three records between 1998 and 2000: "Ten Tracks", "Fly Fly Fly", and "Trails of the Rails." It was in Hamburg that Dan wrote the songs "Stranger than Youth", "Todd's Rocket", and "Hello Wind."
July of 2000 found Dan back in the States, in central Vermont, where he recorded his solo album "Plain" at Goddard College in Plainfield. Once again he became everyone's favorite guitar/mandolin player and ended up working on projects with Spencer Lewis, Derrick Semler, Susanna Blachly, Colin McCaffrey, Minstrel Mission, Heather Moz, Rusty Romance, and several others.
Then on Christmas Eve of 2000 Dan was playing with Colin at Capitol Grounds coffeehouse in Montpelier when local singer-songwriter Mark LeGrand spotted him and roped him into playing mandolin on LeGrand's album "All Dressed Up". This partnership has remained one of Dan's most consistent endeavors, wherein Dan has played guitar and mandolin for Mark's various bands. Dan's current projects include a freak-folk jazz trio called MISTER CASUAL, a folk-rock duo with his partner Rachael Rice and a renewed commitment to solo jazz and bebop performance.
Nick Bowers, Sound Recordings isn’t just a live sound
recording studio. Located in a 200 year
old 3 bedroom bed and breakfast style farmhouse on 40 acres in Wolcott,
Vermont, the project studio of NBSR offers great rates, a relaxed atmosphere,
and the seclusion needed to lay down those most righteous of tracks. And just like the mobile unit, there is never
an initial mixing charge at Nick Bowers, Sound Recordings.

I'm not sure if you got my message about the Billy K cover. But thanks for the add. I was searching your tunes for BK influence. You are one of very few to actually note him as an 'influence'. Billy and I go way back. We were buskers together in the 80's. I can picture your face at 'The Med' on Burnside. We need to connect...for Billy's sake.
Hey Dan, Thanks for adding me to your list. I know your the busiest musician in central VT, but I really enjoyed jammin' with you last week. We should do more of it in the future.
Oh. My. Gosh! Dan Haley, you are my most favorite crooner of all time. And such an amazing song writer too. It is SO FLIPPIN' COOL to hear you singing on my computer right now. Ahhhhhhh. :) I hope everything is going great for you. So glad you found me!
Videos of Jeffrey Frederick in action are finally up on MySpace -- historical, hysterical, just damn good. Here's one of them (check the others out, too):
