Danielle began writing songs on her piano at home in her bedroom; detaching herself from the world outside, she wrote the songs that would ultimately feature on her second album "Calling All Magicians". “It came in stages, in the sense that I was carving out little bits of time to write and record, and I then sort of felt like I’d got my musical-flow back. By the time I finished the music and the lyrics for all the songs, I realised that I’d got a bunch of songs together that I finally felt sounded like an album.”
“I knew that I wanted to make this album sound different to my last album which was quite electronic, and used a fair bit of programming. This time around I wanted it to be more of band sound and a friend suggested approaching Tony Visconti to produce it (best known for his groundbreaking work with David Bowie in the 70s).
"I’m a huge fan of his work and the way he arranges in a raw, real soundscape. I sent him 4 songs initially in demo form with just vocals and piano and was thrilled when he agreed to come on board to produce the album. For someone with such an amazing background, I couldn’t believe how much commitment and focus he brought to my project.”
"Calling All Magicians" is an album rooted in the intensely creative energies and expressions of singer songwriter musician Danielle Spencer. New single 'On Your Side' out in the UK 25th January and the album 'Calling All Magicians' out 15 February. Australian dates to be announced shortly.
THE GUN. A moment later, Danny’s little hand slowly comes out of the flight jacket with the butt end of Welham’s service revolver. Seeing the weapon, his eyes grow fearful. Gulping for air, he slowly pushes the gun back inside. WELHAM COUGHS. Danny wait’s a brief moment before reaching back into the Royal Air Force leather flight jacket. A moment later, he pulls out a small, flip wallet and examines it.
THE WALLET. The large gold letters beneath the gold embossed lion read:
I love your song, "On Your Side"! Any chance you will be touring Texas? Looking forward to buying "Call All Magicians"! I wish you much success with your latest CD!
I don't know if you remember me but the last time i saw you was in December 2002 and prior to that i saw your show at Katoomba where i gave you that framed collage of photos and your first album "White Monkey". Really excited to read in the paper yesterday that you are about to release your 2nd album as my whole family loved the album "White Monkey", including my twin sisters. Well take care, of yourself and your lovely family. xo. Sheridan
Great to hear your new music. Love the single. You're in the UK next month and I will endeavour to come watch you perform! Have a great Christmas and good luck for next year and with the new album too.
THE MIRROR. Standing over the piano with smoking revolver in hand, as seen in the full length mirror, the French mother’s slashed face is expressionless. The gun slips from her grasp tumbling onto the piano, eventually landing onto the floor at her feet. Sitting back down, she calmly resumes playing “Love Death,“ in all her infinite sadness.
Now depleted, my empty soul has yet to smile. Without her I am nothing. And although I live in darkness, she was what I imagined to be warm sunshine. She was the air of which I found my very breath. My very life. Her porcelain skin soft to the touch. Her ruby lips wet to the taste. Her gentle voice sweet to the ear. Now gone like falling sands through the hourglass. Gone like the love in her eyes. Gone like the wind in her hair. Gone as the sun is to night. As night is to day. Light is to Darkness. Darkness to Eternity.
A TWO SHOT. Standing upright, Welham picks the boy up by his waist and painfully lifts him onto the interrogation table. Kissing him on the forehead, the former ace reaches into his pocket and pulls out his mother’s locket.
WELHAM Je taime mon cher. Bon chance. Keep this close to your heart at all times Daniel. . .me mum’s keepsake. . .she gave it to me when I was ‘bout yer size. . .pint sized to a pee wee. Take good care of her Daniel. She‘ll help you make it to the Americans. I know it.
THE LOCKET. Dangling from his hand, the locket sparkles with each and every landing MORTAR that continues to intermittently light up the cellar window.
Danielle, it has been awhile, quite awhile since I checked my MYSPACE page. OMG, I have missed a lot. That voice of your's, that one-of-a-kind voice gives me goosebumps. I am a single parent of a teenager daughter, and for her to like the same music that I do....BLOWS ME AWAY....WE NEVER AGREE ON MUSIC!!! Please keep singing and writing and take good care of your lovely family. :-)
Being a fan of your music is very easy. Waiting for the album release is hard!! The count down is finally coming. Yah! I do have one question regarding gigs, since you have a new record label. Will you only perform in England when the album is released or will include a few Australian gigs? I’m dyeing to see you perform live again. The drought has been harsh.
