REVIEW OF DPB'S DEBUT CD, "LOVE THAT FIRE"
BY MAC MCDONALD,
MONTEREY COUNTY HERALD
"One of my favorite local bands, the soul-rock quartet led by powerhouse vocalist Dani Paige [is] celebratng the release of their debut CD, "Love That Fire," with what is sure to be a wild and wondrous celebration.
The 12-cut CD is entirely written and performed by the band, except for an outside bassist on one cut and the addition of a saxophonist on three cuts. The disc was even produced by band guitarist Jesse DeCarlo, who shows off some impressive chops and inventive licks on the CD.
In fact, that's one of the many delights of the new album, that it's an organic, stripped-down sound with just vocals, guitar, bass and drums (with the occasional sax), but it feels full and robust.
Paige is a revelation, digging down deep to wrap her vibrant voice around the lyrics and wring every bit of passion and emotion out of them. It's amazing that that big voice comes out of such a diminutive body.
I know it's easy to compare Paige to such contemporary retro-soul singers as Joss Stone, but Paige can match the English neo-soul singer, with a little more grit and heartache.
And DeCarlo shows off his many facets, chunky soul licks on one track, some rippin' blues-rock guitar on another (check out the nasty licks on "Bottle of Whiskey") and then sliding into some smooth, jazzy playing on songs such as "All You Do."
Bassist Rhonda Kinard and drummer Jenn Schaaf are solidly in the pocket, providing a bedrock that DeCarlo and Paige can take wing off of. "
"With so many big, impressive voices being heard in music these days, it takes something more to stand out. Dani Paige offers an example of what "something more" sounds like. Besides having a rich, supple, powerful voice, her gift for songwriting places her in a completely different category from the overhyped karaoke singers that populate the contemporary musical landscape. Ms. Paige and songwriting partner/guitarist Jesse DeCarlo, with drummer Jenn Schaaf and bassist Rhonda Kinard, have created something that fans of the R&B-soul-rock tradition have been craving for years: songs that are catchy but not disposable, and show genuine musicianship without sounding clinical. Like the great soul music of days past, the choruses grab your ear and don't let go, while the rhythm pulls you out of your seat and makes you want to dance. But unlike a retro act, the Dani Paige Band focuses these influences through a lens of individual passion and experience to create something fresh and exciting."
"This is soulful rock of the first order."
-Mac McDonald, Monterey County Herald
"[Dani Paige is] one of the most promising vocalists in the Bay Area."
-John Scott, www.ModernVocalist.com
"...Paige’s backing band grinds out a more timeless blend of rock, soul and funk. Check out [Dani Paige Band's] “Fortune Teller,” a stripped down ballad that already sounds like a classic."
-Stuart Thornton, MC Weekly
"...featuring the soulful singing of singer [Dani] Paige and guitarist Jesse DeCarlo. The band wowed crowds recently at First Night Monterey and are fast becoming a favorite of Monterey Live audiences."
-Mac McDonald , Monterey County Herald.
"While listening to Paige's songs, including "Love That Fire" and "Fortune Teller," it is hard to believe that the full-bodied, soulful vocals come from a woman who is in her early twenties. The husky singing seems to be from a seasoned vet instead of someone in her first real band."
-Stuart Thornton, MC Weekly
