Daniel Goode (b. New York, January 24, 1936) is an American composer and clarinetist. He studied philosophy, and then music with Henry Cowell, Otto Luening, Pauline Oliveros, and Kenneth Gaburo. Goode's works show influence from several sources, including bird song, Cape Breton fiddling, drone, Indonesian gamelan music, and minimal music (specifically music as a gradual process). Often two or more of these elements are combined in a single composition.Goode served as Director of the Electronic Music Studio of Rutgers University from 1971 to 1998 and is co-director of the DownTown Ensemble which he co-founded in New York in 1983. As a clarinetist he is proficient in the technique of circular breathing, which he uses frequently in performances with the group.
Since 1976, Goode has been a member of Gamelan Son of Lion, a Javanese-style iron gamelan ensemble dedicated to new music, for which he has composed many works. He has developed a special keyless clarinet made from a length of plastic pipe that allows him to play in the Indonesian slendro tuning system, which he plays with the group on occasion. His most recent project is the Flexible Orchestra, a reform of the Western orchestra inspired to some degree by his experience with the gamelan as a musical, social, and cultural phenomenon (see blog above). His works are published by Frog Peak Music and Theodore Presser.

1967, San Francisco’s Fifty
Foot Hose were certainly one of the innovators of a sound that
took Psychedelia to new heights and was captured on the band’s one
record, Cauldron. They are a totally unique hybrid—on one
hand pulsating bay area acid rock, on the other, fractured electronic
freakery, becoming one whole cohesive being. The sci-fi-ish video
game-like artwork hinted at the sounds within, as did the Limelight
label’s pedigree for truly progressive sounds. Band leader, Cork
Marcheschi, used homemade electronic devices to create crude and
experimental soundscapes and instrumental compositions that were
sprinkled throughout the album.
Often starting shows with a
swelling rumble that exploded into the first song, they soon
developed a rabid following on the SF scene, though there was the
occasional totally wrong gig, like when a very-pregnant Nancy had to
perform at a Catholic Girls’ school! Still, the group wowed the
crowds, performing with greats like Chuck
Berry and Fairport
Convention.

Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
