Dan Moses Schreier grew up in Detroit, Michigan surrounded by the Motown sounds of Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the early punk rock of Iggy Pop and the Stooges, and The MC5 and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sexton Erhling. In high school, he studied the oboe and english horn with Sylvia Starkman and music composition with Elaine Lebenbom, then briefly attended the University of Michigan, studying music composition with William Bolcom. At William Bolcom’s suggestion, Dan got a job on a new musical being developed at the University called UP FROM PARADISE, a collaboration between Arthur Miller and Stanley Silverman based on Mr. Miller’s play THE CREATION OF THE WORLD AND OTHER BUSINESS. That year he also briefly played guitar for the noise band DESTROY ALL MONSTERS headed by Los Angeles artists Mike Kelly and Jim Shaw, then students at the University of Michigan Art School. After his freshman year, Dan moved to New York City to work as Stanley Silverman’s assistant, continued his studies at Columbia University studying music composition. His first professional sound design was for the premiere of Richard Foreman's play PENQUIN TOUQUET produced by Joseph Papp at the New York Shakespeare Festival. He then worked for Richard Foreman on six other productions and created a series of soundscapes for the plays of Jeffrey M. Jones produced at the Performing Garage that culminated in Dan receiving an OBIE Award for sustained excellence in Sound Design. With performing artist and puppetmaster Dan Hurlin, he has created a chamber opera, THE SHOULDER that premiered at Dance Theater Workshop and they are currently collaboration on Hurlin's new piece DISFARMER for St Ann's Warehouse in Jan 2009. Compositions for the theater include scores for JULIUS CEASAR starring Denzel Washington, THE GLASS MENAGERIE starring Jessica Lange, the premiere of Tony Kushner's HOMEBODY/KABUL and the premiere of August Wilson's RADIO GOLF. Dan continues to compose and sound design in New York where he has received 3 Drama Desk Awards for his work and has recently designed the sound for the Broadway productions of Stephen Sondheim's ASSASSINS and SWEENEY TODD and the LA Opera's production of MAHAGONNY with Patti Lupone and Audra McDonald. He has designed the sound for GYPSY starring Patti Lupone for which he received a Tony Award nomination and composed the score for Daniel Sullivan's production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Recently worked with Sam Shepard on his production of his new play KICKING A DEAD HORSE and on Stephen Sondheim's new musical ROAD SHOW. Currently designing the up coming Broadway production of WEST SIDE STORY directed by Arthur Laurents. Come see Dan Hurlin's DISFARMER at St. Ann's Warehouse with a score for violin, accordian, and six banjos.
I like your imaginative approach to composition! The mix of post-minimalism/folk and sound design is close to my own inclinations. Why limit oneself to a single path!?!
Hi Dan I like very much the harp, violin and the accordion on "Disfarmer Thinks". Is it Guy Klucevsek on the accordion? Nice too the "Disfarmer Walks" Very inspiring music. Thanks. Mario
Dear Dan Moses: Thanks for your kind note & extension of cyber-friendship. Your eclectic mix of pieces entertained me, especially the kinky harmonic twists and deceptive polytonal suggestions at modulation in the harpsichord music. I admire your stage work immensely - you made everybody sound splendid in the PBS broadcast of "Mahagonny." Look forward to hearing more of your music soon. Good luck - gil.
Thanks a lot for inviting me ! Marvelous music. By the way, I played in Eötvös' Angels in America ... Kushner as a string ... Hope we can do something together some day s
Your music is very interesting, I like the leaps on the stile betwix the pieces, the dissonances in Harpsichord Music 2, and darkness in Tony Kushner's Home...!
Hi Dan, exciting music from an exciting city! How could it be different than this? As we grow older, we get more into the experimental side of music and that..s great because there is so much more to discover. Greetings from Germany. Holger & Ralf
