About me: Danny Dark, born Daniel Darkandbitterson, was destined for rock stardom. At
the age of 17, he decided his town wasn't big enough musically to give him
the exposure he needed. So, he packed his bags and moved from his parents
home in Los Angeles, heading to the bright lights of Salt Lake City. Fame,
however, eluded him. "It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. I mean,
who knew Salt Lake didn't have a huge music scene? I sure didn't!"
But his luck changed when he landed a gig singing backup for Chuck Mangione.
His excitement was short-lived, as he soon began to have creative
differences with Mangione. "I thought a song should have, you know, words.
He just kept playing that damn flugelhorn. Who the hell plays a flugelhorn
anyway? In hindsight, it probably wasn't the right gig for me. But Chuck
and I are cool now. We're in a good place."
After leaving the band, Danny began to collaborate with Up With People.
Musically, he was writing some of his best work. The hits, including
"People are Groovy", "People Make Me Happy", and "I Love People", just kept
coming. While the public saw a happy and cohesive group, things behind the
scene were strained. The group, thinking his name was sending the wrong
impression to the world, gave him an ultimatum. To stay in the band, Danny
was forced to shorten his last name to Dark. While this let him stay with
the group, his frustration soon showed. His next few songs, "I'm Not Sure I
Like You", "I'm Sad", and "I'm Sad, Part 2", were rarely played in concert.
Soon after recording the song "What the Hell Are You Looking At?", Danny
parted ways with the group.
Danny was devastated by this additional setback. He moved back to
California, where he fell in with a bad crowd. He met up with his old
friend, the San Diego Chicken, and moved into a house that would become a
den of drugs, sex, and other illicit activities. Alcohol and narcotic
fueled binges would last for weeks at a time. "I was in a bad place then.
Moving in with him was really a bad idea. A Technicolor chicken who never
stopped running around like a maniac? I didn't see the drugs coming at
all." Danny's downward spiral continued until the day he hit rock bottom.
"I really wasn't feeling well, but I just thought it had something to do
with the fifth of Sloe Gin, the 5 pounds of hash, and the 30 or so Quaaludes
I took. Boy was I wrong." Danny collapsed. When the paramedics arrived,
he was found on his living room floor, almost suffocating from the shag
carpeting he had inhaled. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was
diagnosed with Avian Flu. "I always told S.D. that he'd be the death of me
with all of the drugs and booze. But his hygiene problems putting me on my
deathbed? No, I wasn't happy about that. I'm not saying I blame him for my
problems back then. I'm just saying I didn't train to be a professional
buffalo wings eater for the health benefits."
Clean, sober, and bad fowl free, Danny began to set his sights on the music
world again. He began to contact all the great musicians he had played with
over the years. While most of them ignored his calls, he was able to
convince a few of them to start a band, and the supergroup, the Black Souls,
was created. "I think we're heading in a good direction now. We've all had
our problems. And life does suck. But we still rock out, and we still play
the best music there is. What more do you want from us?"
