Born in 1976, Dan Sears encountered music for the first time at the age of three when he began piano lessons in his house in Wyckoff, NJ. Through elementary and middle schools, he fell in love with the great trumpeter, Clifford Brown's music, and never looked back. He began to transcribe, and work out lines and ideas, finding great ideas and inspiration from the likes of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Bill Frisell, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, among many others. While in high school Dan performed with the regional and state Jazz and Concert Bands as a soloist and lead player. He also performed regularly as the trumpet player in Lady Rain, a Rock band comprised of young talent like Constantine Maroulis(American Idol), Steve Vidaic (Citizen Cope), Victor Cornette(Mike Rocket), and Joe Russo (Benevento/Russo Duo). He completed his B.M. at William Paterson as a jazz performance major, where he was given the opportunity to perform on stage with the likes of Michael Brecker, Stanley Turrentine, Chico Mendoza, Randy Weston, Paquito D'Rivera, Wynton Marsalis, Cecil Bridewater, Scott Metzger, Jon Faddis, and Ari Hoenig. While in college, he also performed regularly with the 9 piece NYC funk group Sole Pocket, and the the funky 42 Main Street Delicatessen Band. These bands gave him the opportunity to share the stage and performances with Maceo Parker, Milo Z, Ike Willis, and Bernie Worrel. Soon after he teamed up with guitarist Tim Motzer (Kenny Latimore, King Britt, percussionist Jim Hamilton (Boyz2Men), and saxophonist Chris Cuzme (Tonal Evangelist) and founded the Philly Weekly Performer of the Year nominated Global Illage. Dan currently performs on trumpet/keys and as a backup vocalist as a member of Chris Berry's Panjea, recently signed to Wrasse Records. He also performs regularly as a freelance artist for many groups and solo artists, including The String Cheese Incident, Guster, Tift Merritt, Ryan Adams, and Railroad Earth. Dan continues his studies into the arts, musical and visual, and is constantly searching on his horn. He has also ventured into the world of computers, being a Mac Genius/Certified Technician for Apple Computer - www.apple.com, and an Integrated Media Producer for Catalyst Agency - www.catalyst-agency.com...His belief is that versatility is the key to achieving and maintaining success in music, and that spirituality should be the primary motivation for playing music. He believes that a great musician should capture the moment, not be captured by it.
