this is extremely broad but here goes: jazz of all types (traditional, swing, bebop, free, modern), rock and indie rock, post rock, avant garde, funk, electronic music, film music, classical music, etc.
the dan roberts trio is a washington, d.c. area trio comprised of pianist/arranger/composer dan roberts, drummer/percussionist larry ferguson, and bassist jeff reed (www.jeffreedbass.com). there is a cd of that instrumentation doing a complete reworking of the flaming lips' "Yoshimi" album available at cdbaby (cdbaby.com/cd/robertsdan). the group has morphed recently into the dan roberts band, consisting of dan on keys, larry on drums, john lee on guitar, and matt rippetoe on tenor sax. this version of the group is playing primarily original music composed by dan.
the new instrumentation and the new material is still jazz based with improvisation, but relies heavily on rock/indie rock rhythms and textures as well as electronic music. if you were a fan of hearing the group playing tunes by the flaming lips, david bowie, radiohead, the shins, don't worry, they still throw those in with the original material.
