Been compared to Howie Day and Weezer (thanks to Koo Chung www.myspace.com/koochung)
Dan Tan's earliest music lessons were given by his piano-playing older sister as he turned pages while she practiced. Under her tutelage, he learned to sing and harmonize and the meaning of big words like syncopation. Violin and piano lessons put his early learning into practice. A brief college semester with UNC-CH guitar virtuoso William Stewart forever opened his mind to the versatility of the guitar and secured its place as the primary instrument in Dan's life. After years of church choirs, college praise bands, and a brief stint in an experimental Lutheran Generation-X band, Dan Tan began to hone his solo voice at local open mics in 2003. He describes his songs as "tragedies of hope". Tragedy, redemption, and hope are recurring lyrical themes. His style of singing has drawn comparisons to Howie Day and Weezer and John Denver. He has been writing songs since the age of 13, and has written somewhere in excess of 50 songs to date. Currently Dan performs at local coffee shops and at Triangle-area Borders Books and Music stores. When not at his technical day job, Dan can often be found volunteering as a youth counselor, rock climbing, shooting photos, and running sound at small gigs.
