Dan Tyack is a consummate innovator on the steel guitar, possessing a soulful, inimitable voice which wins over music fans of all genres. He cooks up a musical gumbo which mixes influences from blues, rock and roll, soul, New Orleans R&B, Sacred Steel and other gospel sounds, and adds them to a savory base of steel guitar tradition.
Dan has taken a wild ride on his musical journey, taking his steel guitar from the Grand Old Opry to Carnegie Hall to the Wembley Stadium, not to mention every county fair and honky-tonk between Los Angeles and Brussels. The journey started with Dan mining the roots of the steel guitar tradition with country and country-rock artists such as Asleep at the Wheel, Vince Gill, Charlie Louvin, Jean Shepard, Lacy J. Dalton, Dottie West, Donna Fargo, and Hoyt Axton.
Not content with following in the footsteps of steel guitar tradition, Dan’s muse led him to Seattle, where he developed an active session career, and where he started pushing the steel guitar into different areas: blues, R&B, alternative rock, and rock and roll. Dan performed and recorded with artists such as Steve Gadd, Jerry Marrotta, Tony Levin, Holly Figueroa, Skerik, Bill Frisell, and many others. One of the outcomes of this exploration is Dan’s first solo album, “Blackened Toast”, which presents a mix of blues and New Orleans roots music in a critically acclaimed release featuring guest artists Bill Frisell and Paul Franklin.
Dan’s musical journey has taken a significant new direction in the last few years through his involvement with the Sacred Steel community. Dan has performed and recorded with many of the greats in this musical style, including Robert Randolph, the Campbell Brothers, the Lee Boys, and Calvin Cook. Dan has been a featured performer at every Sacred Steel convention, the only non church member to be awarded this honor. Dan appeared on the Campbell Brothers ‘Sacred Steel for the Holidays’ CD, and appeared along with the Campbell Brothers and Robert Randolph on the Second Sacred Steel Convention CD.
Dan’s involvement in the Sacred Steel community was the principal incentive in the forming of the band “The Unsanctified Gospel Revival” and the creation of his 2004 CD of the same name. With this music, Dan is on a mission to bring rockin’ gospel music to all audiences: from saint to sinner, from Baptist to Buddhist, from born again Christian to backsliding Unitarian.
Whether Dan is taking you on a trip on a musical superhighway or a scenic back road, one thing is certain: you will remember his powerful, soulful voice on the steel guitar.

Here's a review of the band from the infamous Dennis Cook of Jambase.com: A touch too punchy to make the morning offerings, I stumbled in and got WOKE THE FUCK UP by Big High, a local hard rock ensemble and friends to Flowmotion that struck a first impression akin to my first mind-blowing Drunk Horse gig. Like Oakland's steel-plated punk-boogie juggernaut, Big High aren't screwing around and it wasn't a whole tune before I was shaking like a madman close to the stage. Killer tunes, a crazy tight band and a lead singer (Mesa on "vocal flyfishing") possessed of a fathomless bottom and high reachin' top end plus a leaping, fiercely engaging stage presence, and well Big High sorta rocked my widdle world. It's serious heavy muscle that puts a lil' anger and sex in your bloodstream, culminating in a frighteningly good cover of The Who's "Baba O'Riley" delivered in Dr. John style feather masks for no good reason except to be delightfully weird. If you're feeling Clutch, Parlor Mob or just dig quality hard rock you're missing out if you don't get to know Big High. At the end of their set I bellowed, quite uncontrollably, "We're awake now, motherfuckers!" Meant it, too. -- Dennis Cook--www.jambase.com www.myspace.com/bighighmusic BIG HIGH is also on facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/BIG-HIGH/134022157365?ref=nf High Dive www.highdiveseattle.com 513 N 36th St # G Seattle, WA 98103-8693 (206) 632-0212 &
