Q&A Session With Dan...
Q: Where did you grow up?
A: A town south of Detroit called Wyandotte.
Q: When did you start playing guitar?
A: In my early teens. My Dad had an old guitar he used for Peter, Paul & Mary sing-a-longs but I never had the inkling to pick it up until I heard "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton. My goal was to learn that song and move on but it turned out trying to retire after learning one song was like trying to stop after eating one cashew, in other words, nigh impossible. I like cashews. A lot.
Q: When did you start writing your own music?
A: When my high school girlfriend hooked up with another guy and I faced that I wasn't burly enough to beat anyone up. So I vented about it over a 3-chord progression and felt considerably better afterward. Thus the first handful of songs I wrote were mushy, angst-filled heartache medicine. That theme has been progressively evolving ever since.
Q: Who are your musical influences?
A: Early on I liked what my Dad had on vinyl, Simon & Garfunkel, Van Morrison, tons of Motown. In my teens, I was going broke on tablature from Counting Crows, Dave Matthews Band, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Scads of old school rap likely factored in somewhere too. Nowadays I listen to everything from T.I. to Vivaldi but some artists I admire who craft in similar style are Iron & Wine, Brett Dennen, Teitur Lassen, Death Cab, Fionn Regan, John Mayer, Glen Phillips, Damien Rice, Peter Mulvey, Jason Mraz, Snow Patrol, Matt Nathanson, and Jack Johnson.
Q: What are some of your other interests besides songwriting?
A: I’m into essay and memoir writing. If you give me a pencil and sketchpad I’ll be occupied for hours doodling monsters and superheroes. I burn a lot of time trying ethnic cuisine & pub delicacies, making smorgasbords, balancing the feng shui at my crib, daydreaming, and philosophizing. I’ve got an insane collection of comic books, 80's toys, and movie related paraphernalia. I'm a Paleontology geek complete with a meticulous fossil collection. To burn calories I play hockey. To get a farmer's tan I play golf. I nap whenever possible.
Dan Vincent writes and records music. Dan dabbles in paleontology. Dan is quick with chopsticks. Dan has fiction calluses. Dan is a (hopeful) realist. Dan knees indignation in the groin. Dan has a tic for perpendicularity. Dan does laundry in an arcade. Dan shoots five-hole. Dan engages in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Dan has a MOC ESB Hoth Han 31-back. Dan thinks your faults are the proverbial "good stuff". Dan slathers chili-cheese fries with hot sauce. Dan loves loving love. For real.
Dan Vincent's latest album Shallow and the Deep is the perfect follow-up to his pleasing debut album Other Bedroom. Shallow and the Deep is the Empire Strikes Back of Dan's discography, an eyebrow raising sequel with songs as cool as Taun Tauns, AT-ATs, and Boba Fett. Present are the catchy music, clever lyricism, and warm vocals you'd expect, with the addition of matured song-writing, deeper emotional range, and tighter production.
Singer-songwriter Dan Vincent is a Detroit native whose laid back stylings are reminiscent of Jack Johnson on Brushfire Fairytales and John Mayer's Room For Squares. Fans and critics have noted that the smooth melodies of Dan's guitar pair sweetly with his poetic, introspective lyrics and lush voice. Upbeat songs such as "Lift Me Up" and "Be In Love" compliment the longing romance of "Stay Indoors" and lonely heartbreak of "The Blame". Catchy sing-a-longs "Silly Love" and "Before You Go" have the makings of instant favorites. The poetic beauty of "Love is a Weight" is reason enough to add this CD to your collection. Beginning to end, fans of the acoustic singer-songwriter genre are guaranteed to enjoy this musical gem.
Yeah, as I was posting those pics, I wondered if you would catch those in there. The actual museum was closed, so the only things we were able to see were in the visitor's center...still, very cool. I think those were only half of my pictures...I'm still sorting through them all.
Thanks for the add! Hope you like our few songs we have posted up. Coming soon though we'll have new versions of our songs, with the addition of violin and all in better quality! Lata! Under Consideration
thanx Dan!! we'll have to have a beer together at Brooklyn's sometime... I'm there a lot, or so it seems ;) that Tigers pic is one of my all time favorites ~ so cool that you still have your card, I wish I had the shirt from the picture! =)
Dan, thanks for the comment...I'd be more than happy to add your music to my playlist and get the word out for you. I appreciate your message as well as your sound. Let me know if you make your way down to Hampton Roads in Virginia and we'll definitely stop by to enjoy you live. For me it was the former first, then the latter. Hopefully you've had the same opportunities.
I was trying to figure out why on such a beautiful sunny post-winter day I had nothing but "Stay Indoors" running through my mind. Maybe it's because spring is coming...or maybe it's because I wanted to be left alone. At any rate, just thought you would like to know that gleaming song stuck with me all day.
Wallowing in heartbreak never sounded so good, my friend! It's funny...your voice whispers subtleness...but your words scream. It's just...dare I say..."dantastic"!!!
Hey Dan~ Thanks for the add and for such nice compliments on my "works of art"! Keep supporting those local shows in your area...they need you! Lovin' your sound...I'm jealous of your musical talent! Keep up the good work!
Apart from being one of those comments you rightfully hate with all your divine powers this also happens to be...well, my stupid attempt to leave a trace in your frontal lobe that'll last more than 10 seconds. I don't believe it'll work, but I believe in unbelivable things.
The album. Download it. Either on iTunes or for free (on my page). Let it breathe on your playlist for a while. Let it grace your chips, wires, ears. It'll make your aura shine. Then again, maybe you don't like presents. Which is perfectly fine.
