About me:
The Darby Library Company has provided public service to this community since 1743. It has the distinction of being the "Oldest Continually Operated Public Library in the Country". The initial collection of books purchased by funds donated by the founders were housed in the home of the Librarian. Today this original collection can be found in the Library for patrons to view.
As the collection grew, it became necessary to relocate over Philip Sipler's Saddle Shop on Main Street, now the home of Darby Hardware Store.
Through the support of the Darby Community, the corner property at 10th and Main was purchased in 1866. Members and citizens raised the sum of $8,895.54 to pay for construction cost. The present library building was built by Charles Bonsall in 1872 and called, "Darby Library Hall." It is here over the last 140 years, that the Darby Library Company had managed not only to provide basic library serivce but to grow and expand to include 20,000 volumes of books, books on tape and CD-ROM, magazines, videos, DVD's and computers.
We also host educational and out reach programs.
