Darius began his professional career as a teenager with the late Milton Brunson and the Thompson Community Singers. In the early-80s’ a young, Darius Brooks and Percy Bady came on the scene and added a contemporary flare to their traditional sound.
For nearly two decades, the skilled musicians and writers sang, composed and directed several of the choir’s 1 hits ushering the group into the hearts and souls of gospel lovers everywhere and leading them to be one of the most celebrated gospel choirs of all time. They have released 10 chart-topping albums and in 1995, won a Grammy award for “Best Gospel Album by a Choir or Chorus” for “Through God's Eyes.”
In 1998, celebrating their 50th Anniversary, the group was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, an honor that their acclaimed leader, Rev. Milton Brunson, fell just a year shy of enjoying with them. He passed away the previous year, on April 1, 1997.
The group was disassembled in 2000, but in 2003, Brooks envisioned the group reassembling for one final collaboration. ‘Darius Brooks Presents The Reunion – Side A,’ which represents the first half of the extraordinary concert, serves as a partial record of that live celebration featuring the original writers, singers, musicians and directors of the famed “Thompson Community Singers.”
Returning heavy-hitters included Charles “Al” Willis, Richard Gibbs, and Kevin Brunson, son of the group’s beloved founder. Reunited, these pioneers produced an unforgettable souvenir of their legendary existence and their extraordinary contribution to today’s gospel music.

Darius Brooks, a man who has been one of Gospel’s greatest driving creative forces may not be recognized by his name alone but by his unprecedented gift. He has been behind the scenes of some of gospel’s biggest songs and stars. For the last two decades, Darius has thrived in almost every musical capacity imaginable from songwriter, singer and accompanist, to arranger and producer for a host of Gospel luminaries that includes Shirley Caesar, Vickie Winans, the late Rev. Milton Brunson and the Thompson Community Singers, and Ricky Dillard, jazz legend Ramsey Lewis, as well as, R&B icons Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and current chart-topper Avant, to name but a few.
Grammy, Stellar and Dove Awards are among the many accolades he has received, and yet, with a resumé already to his credit that most artists can only dream of, Brooks is just getting started. The widespread affection for his 2004 release “Your Will” accelerated Darius’ career with numerous television appearances, including his performance and nomination at the 19th Annual Stellar Awards.
Don Jackson, CEO, Chairman of Central City Productions had this to say, “My decision to have him perform on the Stellar Awards was right on target because the biggest response we received from that show was in reference to Darius’ great performance and stage presence.”
BET, Trinity Broadcasting Network, Inspiration Network, and TV One are among the other outlets where Brooks continues to be seen. When he’s not in the studio he has an active touring schedule that has included: Billboard/AURN’s R&B Hip Hop Conference, T.D. Jakes Megafest, Gospel Music Workshop of America and a 23-city tour with platinum selling artist, Fred Hammond. His international reach extends to Great Britain, Scandinavia, Italy, South Africa and Germany who are currently playing his music.
After placing such treasures in gospel music history as “Safe in His Arms,” “My Mind’s Made Up,” “For The Good of Them,” “If I Be Lifted” and many others. This Spring he returns with his best yet - MY SOUL, an outpouring of his life experiences to melodies.
A true renaissance man, Darius, his wife Deborah and their daughter make their home in Chicago where he serves as musical director for Reverend Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition and he also mentors vocalists and musicians through his SDM Foundation. Now moving to the next level in his life, Brooks says “I look at my life as a song that I’m writing. Everyday I add another line, another instrument, possibly a new tempo. I can honestly say I have a better understanding of my past and I am enjoying writing the lyrics of my life.”
