Way back in the hazy, golden year of 1998, Rich ‘Foul oath mutterer’ Moloney and Ben ‘Filthy rambunctious savage’ Riggs decided to start a metal band. They recruited a vocalist Kyle Austin in March. Later a guitarist Rob ‘Piddles in bins’ LaRoche in April and became known as Beyond the Threshold.
For half a year they beavered away writing frenzied, yet strangely toe-tapping ditties before unleashing their metallic fury in a string of gigs in the north Herts area.
It was at this time a name change was needed as there was another local outfit of the same denomination.
The quartet became known as Dark Cell.
In March 1999 the line up was completed with the addition of bassist Dan ‘The kitten he trod on was dead’ Ramsey, which added a much needed depth to the sound and continued with the aural onslaught.
They rehearsed in Zoo studios in Hitchin (formally run by Fields of the Nephilim) and produced a 2 track demo of Promised lands a Evolution/church of evil.
There was much rejoicing, drinking, smoking, vomiting, shitting and dubious shenanigans that ensued.
In 2000/2001 Zoo studios sadly closed down which was a blow to the band as rehearsal rooms were quite rare at the time. In the years that followed, Dark Cell struggled to find a regular rehearsal place, highlighted by the attempted rental of a bungalow in Codicote, which was compromised only by the over-zealous destruction of masonary and brickwork, which resulted in the abrupt ousting by the owner!
Then there was the suspicious burning (possibly by irritated, slightly deafened and pitchfork wielding local residents) of the Canyon in Stevenage, which did not aid the cause!
Dark Cell’s 2nd drink fuelled offering came from a live E.P recorded at the Harlow Square in 2000, consisting of 7 tracks including the 2 demo tracks recorded at Zoo studios and in this time period the band played with the likes of Kill II this, Brutal Deluxe and Budgie (alright settle down!!).
A definitive moment in the band’s history came (and went) with the departure of vocalist Kyle Austin, Complicated by the fact they had started to record their second studio demo produced by Nod Wright from Last Rites (former Fields of the Nephilim drummer)
Eventually in 2003 they recruited the talents of Paul ‘will cunt about for money’ Hoeg (ex-bitchfodder member) and completed the recording.
Ben Riggs was temporarily replaced by the able James Hunt who is now with Scavenger’s Daughter, in 2005 Ben returned and rejoined the band.
Ever since, Dark Cell have been writing debauched, vice induced material and continue to harbour grudges!
