Bio
. Dark Theory started life in September 2008 as raw solo project by current front man Ryan. He recorded the 10 track demo 'Every Kind of Filth' mainly through a cheap practice amp and basic computer recording software, with the total writing and recording of the songs taking a couple of months. Stylistically it was based heavily in pure old school Black Metal, but had a massive influence from Doom Metal and Experimental Noise as well, leading one reviewer to say 'I couldn't listen to it all the way through without reaching for a bucket to be sick in' and another to call it an underground masterpiece many simply won't understand. Some 6 months after this release a second 10 track demo was started, being released in the summer of 2009. This was called 'Disgust for Humanity' and fully embraced the electronic influences that had only been hinted at in Every Kind of Filth and was also far more experimental. The demo was hard to define as it combined Black Metal, Doom Metal, Grindcore, Drum n Bass, Techno, Experimental Noise and occasional dashes of other genres. The band was doing well on myspace and facebook at this point but Ryan eventually decided that live was the way forward. He recruited Callum Wilkinson (who had originally come up with the band name long ago) and Olivia Kennet as guitarists while doing lead vocals and bass himself. Callum left not too long later and the band decided to start writing and recording a new demo while they searched for new members. This third demo which came to be known as 'Look Into The Mirror' took on a very different musical direction. It was still rooted heavily in Black Metal but incorporated much stronger Doom Metal influences than before as well being less experimental. The inclusion of Liv's operatic backing vocals and use of keyboards added a thick gothic texture that the band previously hadn't had, and the joining of lead guitarist Mike Cronje added more technicality and Thrash influences. The band finally played their first gig with this three piece line up and a drum machine to a packed Lord Nelson Pub in Broadstairs in June 2010, immediately being approached by the sound technician who gave them the details of his recording studio. Very shortly after they went to this studio and recorded their debut EP, simply named 'Bludgeon EP'. It featured 3 of the more Black Metal influenced tracks from the Look Into The Mirror Demo, the Drum n Bass laden Suicide is for the Weak, the balls out Symphonic/Black/Thrash assault that was the EP's title track Bludgeon, and the slightly more doomy and experimental Vampire's Pain, all of which became staples of Dark Theory's live set for quite a while. Also on the EP was an entirely new song with a much stronger electronic element than the others simply named 'The Experiment'. Dark Theory's next two gigs saw the band supporting some very big names such as Seven Year Kismet (now The Dying Reflex) Foreboding Ether, The Boy Will Drown, Malefice, and two bands that later went on to play Bloodstock called Wretched Soul and The Furious Horde. Shortly after this they finally got their first drummer in the form of Harvey Davey. Things went very well for the band playing many gigs and meeting loads of excellent local bands, even getting to the Semi Finals of the local Battle of the Bands. Problems started to arise at this point however, as the range of influences the band was trying to combine left the setlist seeming like a collection of good but unconnected songs, as well as lead guitarist Cronje wanting to veer more towards a Grove Metal/Metalcore influenced sound. Just as the band were starting to streamline the setlist a bit, Cronje quit, forcing the band to quit a gig they already had booked for the next day. Olivia moved from keyboard to guitar and the band played the Semi Finals of the battle of the bands as a power trio, eventually losing to a local Alternative Rock band. Another catastrophe for the band happened soon after however, as five days before the band were supposed to play the biggest gig of their lives so far (they were half way up the bill for ex-Cradle of Filth member Sarah Jezebel Deva's solo project) Harvey quit to appease his girlfriend's jealousy. Determined not to let this stop them however, the two remaining members re-programmed their drum machine and went ahead with the gig anyway, getting a personal well done from Sarah herself. The next year and a bit was slow, with the band continuing as a two piece. While there were many gigs most of which went well, the drum machine was not suited well to live performances and sound issues often hampered the band. Dark Theory managed to write some new material in this time however, eventually writing and recording a demo version of a whole debut album. There was a brief surge in interest when they temporarily got a new drummer in the summer of 2011 (Bob Miller) for a few months and managed to support Sarah Jezebel Deva once more as well as selling out of EP's, but he soon quit when university started. While the gigging and practising continued, the lack of members was a constant plague on the band's live performances until just before they had finished demoing the album in July 2012. This is when Sam Field joined on drums, playing a gig with them only 8 days later. Less than a week after this Brett Linsdell joins on keyboards and by the end of September this line up had played to nearly 200 people opening the 'Mane' stage of the Red Roar Festival at the Red Lion in Gravesend supporting Silent Descent, the biggest band they had played with to date. On top of that they even filmed an official music video for the song 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' which they had recorded in a studio earlier in the summer. The bands fanbase grew rapidly over the next few months and the band continued to play with this line up, managing for the first time to have a line up that was both stable and fully into the Black Metal image, allowing the band to finally build up their dark image and theatrics. By the end of 2012, 5 months after getting a full time drummer and keyboardist, the band also came into several other bits of good news. At the beginning of December Calum Conkie, better known by his stage name Luci Hades Manor, crossdressing front man of Luci Hades Manor and the Subjects, joined the band on lead guitar and Gaz Hough, bassist of the now defunct Deathcore band Trigger to my Mind joined on bass so that original bassist Ryan was purely on vocals, able to prowl the stage. The re-release of the Bludgeon EP also came onto Rhys Stevenson's (owner of Global Metal Apocalypse) top 50 releases of 2012 at number 20 and Dark Theory also came in at number 3 in Global Metal Apocalypse's bands of the month for December 2012. . Bio:
............
Dark Theory is an avant-garde extreme metal band, fueled mostly by alcohol and a hate of the general 'music' scene. We combine the dark stylings and aesthetics of Black Metal with the agression of Thrash and Death Metal, the harsh futuristic sound of Electro, Aggrotech and Drum n Bass, the thick crushing heaviness of Doom Metal and the disturbing melodies of Gothic Metal as well as having outright Avant-garde elements. Originally formed in September 2006 as a regular 4-piece with a more mainstream influence, the band went through many changes before the unreliablity of members caused founder and bassist Ryan to continue the band alone in late 2007. The two early demos were a sort of experimental black/thrash with some doom elements, and were only sent to a very small amount of people due to low quality content. With Dark Theory's first 'proper' release, "Every Kind of Filth", the genre was rooted firmly in Black Metal and Doom Metal, but had many experimental elements. Although few people heard it at first, reactions were good and the album was noted for being particularly dark and disturbing even in the world of Black Metal. The release of the next demo album, "Disgust for Humanity" was something of a 'breakthrough' for the band, as many more people came in contact causing both demos to be sent to many people from around the world. Within the next few months the band received many encouraging comments, an increase in plays, several highly positive reviews and has turned it's attentions to becoming a live band. As of January 12th Dark Theory added Olivia on guitar, keyboards and backing vocals, and on May 9th added Cronje on lead guitar and backing vocals, and after a long, desperate search, on November 14th added Harvey Davey on drums, but we would really like a rhythm guitarist. Please note we are in rejection of the local Deathcore and Metalcore overload because they all sound the fucking same. If you want to get a copy of either of our demos they will soon be avaliable through the Santania Productions website www.santanica.org under the Darkwave/Electro/Other section, as will our upcoming debut EP Look Into The Mirror. Also if you enjoy Dark Theory you may enjoy Ryan's Industrial Noise project "Desolation Machine" and Olivia's Acoustic Rock band "Out of Bounds".
