A self-taught guitarist, Darlene is an artist who defies categorization with her fusion of musical styles; blending folk, blues, jazz and pop with her unique guitar finger work and innovative melodies.
Darlene was nominated for 'best female songwriter' and 'best produced album' at the Vancouver Island Music Awards 2003 for her debut album dangerously deep.
She has been a featured singer/songwriter at Nanaimo's Island Showcase, Cowichan Folk Guild's Songstress Songfest, ICA Munchtime Music, Northwest Folklife Festival, CFUV radio, NewVI, and Nanaimo's Song Circle.
Darlene's singing voice is being heard and described as "addictive and soothing to the heart". As Jenny Matechuk, Arts & Entertainment, CH Television, declared, Darlene conveys a quality of vocal purity that gets your attention. Her fresh approach and intelligent song writing distinguishes her as an artist you want to hear when you've had enough of the ordinary.
"Darlene's refreshing voice and hypnotic quality of her music really comes to the forefront in her live performance. She effortlessly captures your attention and wraps you up in the creativity of her music. Her song WHO is one of the best love songs I have come across in my two years promoting Island Music on CHLY fm radio."
Brian Hazelbower, Programmer Songwriters Circle CHLY 101.7fm, Nanaimo, B.C.
"Since listening to Darlene perform recently in Nanaimo, her CD will be included in my personal collection of writers that I respect and listen to for inspiration. Her singing voice is addictive and soothing to the heart. Her lyrics are thought filled and with her voice lend a sense of healing. The last writer to stir my spirit this way was Jann Arden. Hey, Darlene, if you get a chance come on down to Victoria on Friday night - 7th - at James Bay Coffee & Books, 143 Menzies around 8pm. You can hear the latest iteration of a song I was working on at the SAC workshop. Best, Ken
Darlene, it was so good to meet you this weekend in Vancouver. I was struck by the character of your voice - yes, I have a song in mind - and it would be great at some point to hear more of your work live. And, of course, it would be fun to do some work with you. I am back at James Bay Coffee & Books on March 7 as featured performer, so if you get a chance to be a city mouse again - come on down. Looking forward to seeing you again, Ken

Hi Darlene,
Hope all is well. Just wanted to let you know about my Debut Album, "If You Believe", coming soon. You can listen to some new tracks now on myspace!
All the best,
Lizann
Hi Darlene! Hoping that you'll be able to make it over to James Bay Coffee & Books this Friday (May 4 at 8pm) for the 3rd Anniversary Celebration of live music at that venue. What a great story - supporting local musicians (especially the song-writing rascals) for 3 years. My feature set is about 9pm and I'm positive that you'll love the atmosphere, folks and music. SeeYaThere! Ken
Hey Darween,
Miss you guys down here in Vic. It's been cool chillin with Shane at ball. Tell him I'm sorry I missed his B-party. Bethany and I went to Red Robins on Monday to hang with him, but I guess he'd already left. Your songs are sounding as sweet as ever!
Hey, Darlene, glad to "add" to your site and I enjoyed listening to your posted songs. "Flowers" had a particular energy that I enjoyed - and reminded me of an Anthony Newley song from the 60's about smelling the roses. So, people who listen to songs often make connections that the writer wouldn't have known of. That is an interesting process, eh. Best regards, Ken
