2008 Press Release:
ROCK MUSIC OR EXPERIMENTAL WEAPONRY?
by Jason Ross Martin
"These are songs of dissent--political and otherwise," says Andy Palast, the lyricist and front man of the new Asheville 5-piece rock band Darpa—which shares its name with a government agency that makes spy satellites and rocket engines, among other more insidious functions. Having grown together as a result of in studio collaborations in the increasingly fertile Asheville music scene during 2007, Darpa made its live debut in March of 2008.
"They stole the name from me," Palast deadpans, when asked about the link between names.
"I just threw some letters together and made a word. The government built a time machine, and went back and stole it."
Darpa's songs find Palast and his four bandmates Joseph Wagner (guitar),
Kevin Freeman (cello), Greg Terhune (bass), and Steven Jahson Finch (drums) in strikingly more serious tone. Their fascinating songwriting is at once political and romantic. The band draws upon its vast experience within other genres ranging from rock to classical and folk to fusion. With songs that are inspiring and revolutionary, but with an introspective vulnerability as well, Darpa are currently working towards recording their debut album and developing a unique live show.
