“The Fountain” is an odyssey about one man’s eternal struggle to save the woman he loves. His epic journey begins in 16th-century Spain, where conquistador Tomas (HUGH JACKMAN) commences his search for the Fountain of Youth, the legendary entity believed to grant immortality. As modern-day scientist Tommy Creo, he desperately struggles to find a cure for the cancer that is killing his beloved wife, Isabel (RACHEL WEISZ). Traveling through deep space as a 26th-century astronaut, Tom begins to grasp the mysteries that have consumed him for a millennium. The three stories converge into one truth, as the Thomas of all periods—warrior, scientist, and explorer—comes to terms with life, love, death and rebirth.
Hey Darren, Just stopping by to say Hi, thank you for the ADD and wish you well. Hope that you are having a fun, productive and thoughtful week. Greetings from St Paul MN.
Hi Darren. I wanted to drop by and give belated congratulations to you for the achingly beautiful 'The Fountain'. My partner and I watched it for the first time this weekend and were deeply moved by the experience. (Thank goodness for the near-by box of hankies!) You truly created a deep and stunning movie. We found it rich and full of meaning, which is quite a feat considering the vast quantity of forgettable flicks out there. I'm so pleased that you conquered all your obstacles to get the film released. The Fountain is a rare and profound cinematic experience for the viewer, your vision is always understood and greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Darren
Just got my copy of the DVD, now I can watch it whenever I want. The special features are a real insight, but any chance of a special edition? With some commentaries and things?
I'd like to thank you for the great work you're doing , the Fountain is trully a magnificent story told in such a beautiful way ! iloved it and the fact that it was so different from your other movies which i also love so much , especially Pi ...
Keep up the good work you're such a great director
Saw this guys interpretation on imdb, and wnated to know if it held any truth to the fountain.
"I just realized, it's so perfectly clear in the movie, that the bubble in space is almost a mirror of what's happening in the year 2000. I know that all the ad's and the trailers said it's the year 2500, but it never says that in the movie. And even if it is the year 2500, that doesn't mean it happens 500 years after the year 2000. It can be a parallel reality, just for the sake of vision and analogy.
In the space bubble, the tree dies at the same time that Izzy dies in the present day.
In the space bubble, tom explodes in the dying star at the same time that he finally copes with Izzy's death in the present day. Hence the ending: "Everything's all right."
If everything that happens in that bubble is really happening 500 years after the 2000 story line, then why would he be cutting back and forth between them, drawn precise parallels between what happens in the different locations.
The space bubble is either a visual interpretation of Tom's mind, or it is simply a visual, parallel analogy to show us what Tom is going through. The reason he's in the bubble going to Xibalba to get blown up is because that's the story that Izzy used to try and teach him that death is okay. She tried to get him to cope with her cancer, by telling him that death is the road to awe, and about the mayan underworld, and the dying star giving birth to new souls. Therefore, the un-real, visual interpretation of tom's spiritual journey, is shown in that exact way. With him traveling to the dying star. Makes perfect sense. It shows in a precise way, exactly how close he is to grasping what she was trying to teach him. When he reaches the star, he's happy and he says "I'm gonna die! I'm gonna die!". He doesn't literally mean that he's gonna die soon, because that "tom" that explodes in the
The Fountain is absolutely amazing. Saw it in theaters and could not wait for the DVD. I have not shut up talking about a film to friends like this in quite some time!
I saw The Fountain the first week of its debut, & am still so in love with it. The story is remarkable & haunting in a way that relates deeply to the core of every human soul; the journey for eternal life & love that spans lifetimes. Truly the best film I have ever seen; it changed my life.
What a beautiful mind's creation. Blessings to you.
The DVD is damn good even though there's not much in the way of extras. I guess that was WB's doing. I was really hoping for a commentary because I enjoyed your others very much (especially on Pi), but just being able to watch the movie again was a great joy. Thanks again for making such a great film, and I look forward to your next project with great anticipation!!
well i saw "the fountain" twice in theaters and just bought it on tuesday and watched it again! it's such an incredibly though-provoking film that i wish received more praise in the film community. I also wish that the studios hadn't been so uptight about the DVD extras....this film DESERVES more than just a short doc about the making. this film deserves way more informational schwag with it to complete the experience.....SPECIAL EDITION!!!!! anways, thank you for the continued filmming of thought-provoking films. keep it up, put it down, whatever's necessary. just do it with that aronofsky flair!
Darren,
i bought The Fountain on DVD on its day of release, and having missed it in theatres, watched it for the 1st time on Tuesday. i have sinced viewed it a 2nd time. i really loved it. a very emotional and thought-provoking experience. cinematically, it couldn't have been more finely wrought. i'm so sick of the callous commentary by those who refused to open their minds to what you were trying to accomplish. if The Fountain stands as a "love or hate" experience, mark me in the "Love" column. thank you so much for this, and for all of yr films. you deserve support in making the films you want to make in a system where that is rare.
keep creating...
take care,
Henry Covert
I caught 'Below' on IFC the other day and I was blown away by how cool that movie was. I remeber seeing adds for it when it was playing in Seattle years ago, but I never got a chance to see it, and now I have to go out and buy it. It was that cool.
