Darren Sanicki

About me:

By day, I am a Music Lawyer in my brand new law firm Darren Sanicki "music & entertainment" Lawyers based in Melbourne, Australia. By night, I play keyboards with local Melbourne cover band Havana Moon. I guess I think of myself as a musician "daylighting" as a lawyer. Prior to a career in law, much of my working life was spent as a musician, working as producer at a local recording studio and writing the odd cheesy advertising jingle! I worked at an independant record label and also spent two years as a music producer at a commercial television network (which explains some of the pix below). These days when not in the office, I can be found teaching a subject or two of the Music Business degree at Victoria University (hello to any of my students reading this!). I am also the current chairperson of the Board of Directors of “The Push”, a not-for-profit, state wide-youth music organisation. The Push do some amazing work in bringing young people and the music industry closer together. They have some great programs and workshops and of course their annual signature event "Pushover". As a lawyer, I try my best to pass on the benefit of my experiences in the industry and help my clients navigate what can at times be turbulent legal waters. My clients include, musicians, managers, artists, composers, indy labels, publishers, production companies etc. My areas of specialty include negotiating and advising on all types of music related agreements, copyright, trade-mark and other intellectual property matters as well as business structures for bands, partnership agreements etc Often, I just find myself as a sounding board for my clients and providing general career advice.
