Influences
SONIC: Cosmic background radiation and the unavoidable subconscious influence of all the bands in the universe, especially (but not confined to, nor concerned with imitation of): 50s jazz (Joao Gilberto, Miles Davis, John Coltrane...), 60s pop and psychedelia (Beatles, early Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix...), 70s funk (James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Funkadelic...), 80s post-punk and new wave (The Smiths, The Cure, Talking Heads...), 90s grunge and freak rock (Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Jr., Ween...), 00s "alternative" (Elliot Smith, Cake, Tortoise...) and all those great folksters: Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake...
OTHER: Buddha, Ghandi, MLK, Emma Goldman, psychoactive drugs, love and lack thereof, the laughable adsurdity of pop culture and the lamentable madness of politics.
Sounds Like
Mix Phil Ochs with Cake. Add Leonard Cohen meets The Clash. Throw in equal parts They Might Be Giants and Rage Against the Machine. Sprinkle on some Flaming Lips and a dash of Johhny Cash. Shake vigorously. Do the Hokey Pokey. That's what it's all about.
Darrin Drda sounds like a mellower Flaming Lips had a steamy love affair with Jens Lekman. The results were smooth pop, lush with a variety of flutes and horns. If Woody Guthrie were a Jetsons-esque Martian, his music would probably sound akin to Darrins jams. - Brian McGovern, The Buzz
With roots in Champaign, IL, and budding branches in Oakland, CA, Darrin Drda has been doing the singer-songwriter thing for almost 20 years. His earlier music tends to be more "out there" in the psychedelic stratosphere, his later stuff more "down here" on the rocky ground of love and politics.
Consistent throughout all 6 of Darrin's CDs is a melodic sensibility and up-front lyrics that are thought-provoking, politically-charged, irreverent, heartfelt and humorous, sometimes all at once.
From 2003-2006, Theory of Everything (originally known as Darrin Drda's T.O.E.) added depth, height, and breadth to Darrin's quirky compositions with a punchy rhythm section and an eclectic array of instruments including melodion, flute, trumpet, sax, euphonium and keyboard. Over time, the band evolved from an amphibious folk ensemble into a bipedal rock band with kung-fu grip.
The songs "Me and My Mercedes" and "White Guys with Guitars" are from TOE's third CD Loveway. The former features guest vocalist Kayla Brown of Darling Disarm and the latter a cameo by Ryan Groff of elsinore (www.myspace.com/elsinoremusic).
THEORY OF EVERYTHING: Loveway
Vegetable oil-powered pop that moves in many musical directions. Sexy and savvy, with an alt-rock anti-anthem thrown in for good measure.
The other MP3s on this page are from TOE's sophomore CD, 'Evolution of the 'Art, a collection of dynamic ditties with a decidedly political theme.
Here's the CDBaby link:
THEORY OF EVERYTHING: 'Evolution of the 'Art
Eclectic political retrorock with fiestyness, funk, and finesse that provokes activity in the head, heart, and hindquarters.
Here's the CD Baby link to TOE's self-titled debut:
DARRIN DRDA'S THEORY OF EVERYTHING: Theory of Everything
DD's TOE throws melodion, flute, trumpet, freedom horn and other devices into a folky-funky-jazzy pop smorgasbord, all kept at an accessible altitude by catchy melodies and crafty-yet-sincere lyrics.
