Influences
"First it was KISS, thats what made me start playing in the first place. My guitar influences are Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Ace Frehley, Alex
Lifeson, Ty Tabor, Chet Atkins, John McLaughlin, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
The bands I like alot are KISS(1973-1982), W.A.S.P., Iron Maiden, System Of A Down, Korn, Judas Priest, Racer X, Tool, Dream Theature, Gene Loves Jezabel, Kings X, Queensryche, Rush, and local band Broke City. I like a lot of old 80's punk and metal."
Darrin was born December 17th 1970 in Ogden Utah. Darrin’s parents were always listening to classical music in there home. When Darrin was 4 years old he wanted to learn to play the violin, but his parents didn’t think he would stick with it. At age 5 he saw a television commercial for a “KISS” concert and was fascinated by them. Later that year he received the album “Rock and Roll Over” from his brother and began his life long passion for “KISS”. A couple of years later after hearing Ace Frehley’s guitar solo on “Alive II” he decided he wanted to play guitar.
Summer of 1981 Darrin spends the night at his cousins house and learns to play a song on his cousins guitar. The following weekend his dad buys him guitar at swap meet and spends hours a day playing the one and only song he knew.
September 1982 Darrin enrolls in guitar class in school and excels with “A” average grades.
January 1983 gets electric guitar and amp and begins private lessons.
Spring of 1987 starts band with cousin, Ray Opheikens, called “The Relm” and plays first gig in July that same year. “The Relm” continues to play shows until there last show on New Years Eve 1989.
Fall of 1987 Darrin gets job as guitar teacher at “Al and Eddes Music” in Roy Utah. Continues to teach there through 1988 and then moves teaching to his parent’s home.
1988 enrolls in A.P. Music theory at Roy High School. Upon graduating, receives scholarship to the “Institute Of The Arts” in Phoenix AZ, but due to financial reasons was not able to attend.
Spring of 1990 forms band called “Failsafe” with Danny Nobles and Ryan Simon. Band gains reputation as “super group” due to the material they performed. Begins teaching from “Major Chord” music in Layton Utah. Starts teaching at “NU Sound Music” in Roy Utah. Continues with “Failsafe” until July of 1991.
In fall of 1991 forms band called “Doctor Ha! Ha!” with Tim McLaughlin and releases first Album on “Katz-n-Jamr” records in 1992. Band breaks up shortly after. Plays in cover band called “Renigade” throughout 1990-1992.
Fall of 1993 quits “NU Sound Music” and moves business back home.
Summer of 1994 independently releases first solo CD. Continues to stay away from bands for years. Stops teaching guitar lessons and drops off the radar for several years.
Early 2005 forms band called “Mudvision” and independently releases CD later that year. Band breaks up in 2006 and Darrin starts working on solo project.
Fall 2007 starts teaching business called “GOT CHOPS? Guitar Services” in South Ogden Utah. January 2008 Darrin is contacted by Dustin Mitchell of “Nightmare Records” band “Katagory V” and starts negotiating deal to join band. Helps form blues band called “Nine Piece Trio” and plays one show with them in March and later leaves band. Forms acoustic trio called “Evelyn Road”.
September 2008 joins “James Rivera’s”(Helstar, Vicious Rumors, Seven Witches, Flotsam and Jetsam) “Sabbath/Judas/Sabbath”, a tribute to “Black Sabbath” and “Judas Priest” and plays shows with them in October in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. “Rivera” is from Texas, but the rest of “SJS” is Utah based, band recruits local singer and continues to play locally under the name “Black Vengeance”.
May 2009 joins “Katagory V” and begins recording CD. News brings world wide press on “Ultimate Guitar.com”, “Revolver” magazine , “Guitar World” magazine, to name a few. “GOT CHOPS? Guitar Services” continues to grow into very successful business and branches into guitar repair and demo recording service.
Presently Darrin is recording with “Katagory V” and plays shows with “Black Vengeance” and “Sabbath/Judas/Sabbath” and is still working with “Evelyn Road”. Darrin is available for “live” and “studio” fill in work.
