Full time members David Runge and Holger Schilling created the band in 2005 to experiment with massive sounds and feedback. They started using a rehearsal room (also used by other bands and projects of the two) filled with different amplifiers, instruments, effects and stuff to create and deform sound with.
The name taken from decade-long German sci-fi saga Perry Rhodan describes an elephantine creature in space (surrounding a planet), feeding from radiation and being extremely powerful on creating hallucinations.
The sound of Das Bluul is often described as being experimental/ambient/drone/doom/noise/psychedelic/minimalistic. This variety can be explained by a huge amount of different influences and the fact that most of the recordings feature one or more local guests that helped out on the drums, bass, recording, or whatever was available and useful at that particular time.
Das Bluul stands for long but slow, excessive and (in a common sense) not song-orientated instrumental jams. Most of these very long (and loud) songs don’t feature vocals (due to time spent on influencing feedbacks and so on). If so, they’re mostly mantra-like thus still aggressive to support the given manifestation. The songs (especially those made by the two fulltime members) often consist of different layers of repetitive drones and effect-loaded sounds. Through this Das Bluul creates uniquely grim and dark soundscapes (sometimes with a smiling eye).
Starting in 2005, the two full time members recorded Bluul sessions whenever they found the time (and sometimes people) to do so. Early recordings have been made by using a cassette recorder. For the latest releases The Unknown and Horreum Horroris room microphones and an audio interface have been used to better cope with the immense sound created. All their recordings are self-released on Freakquenzy Records, featuring unique artwork and description.
In 2007 Das Bluul made its first public appearance on Freakquenzy Records Roundup performing a re-composition of 2005’s Call Of Cthulhu. The following year they performed with Le Triste Cannibaliste to the Japanese anime Cat Soup. Gigs like these and their selfmade videos accompanying the songs made Das Bluul be known for overwhelming musical concepts.
