The United Students Coalition's Blurbs |
About me:
The United Students Coalition (USC) is a group of 13 candidates for student government office. We are not politicians so much as we are activists. We seek to make De Anza's student government an organization that actively defends students rights, represents concerns and importantly: involve itself fully in all improvements that can be made at De-Anza and in the Bay community.
Our focus is on three primary Goals, each composed of individual projects that form the pathway to reaching successful results for students.
ACTIVE: Re-establish an ACTIVE senate that produces obvious results
DIALOGUE: To truly Represent students, DIALOGUE between student and senate must be the Priority.
COMMUNITY:Influence the growth of a true De-Anza students community; reinforcing cooperation, dialogue and brotherhood.
Plans and Projects: method to achieve
- "Action project": Re-establish De-Anza student Senate as an active and effective government body by establishing an action group system.Increase the continuity of the Senate from one academic year to the next.
- "peace room project": Open Peace center with the purpose of providing neccities for: Meditation, Religious practice, Napping and Relaxation.
- "ECO pass initiative": Aggressively work to negotiate a deal for an Eco-Pass (unlimited ridership bus pass) for all De Anza full-time students.
- "Music in the Quad project": weekly lineup of artists in the quad on tuesdays and thursdays.
- "Big ear initiative": Institute weekly presentation minimum for student representatives to inform students.
- "Legacy project": Improve mthod of continuity between senate terms in office.
- "Humane project": Campus beutification/Educational project designed to landscape all available terrain on De-Anza campus to act as a haven for Eco-diversity.
- "Grand update project": Marketing/raise awarness of tools available to students
- "Baymunity project": (Bay Community) establish Inter-college and Inter-industy activites with bay area establishments. Establish more competitions and events.
- "Student biz projects": establish cooperative with Flynt center and Planetarium to establish student run business simulations.
- "Weekend mall project": Invest into improvement for the De-Anza flea market to adapt it to its growth.
- "Students bank of de-Anza project": establish investment to loan and grant money to students with entrepreneurial plans in: the arts, research, literature and business.
"Entrepreneurship Development center Project": establish small business development cooperative within De-Anza to provide Tools and Grants to Local Entrepreneurs and local small business's."
Budget Transformation:
Over the years, the DASB Senate has gradually taken on the funding of more and more basic services that the college alone used to fund. This has left us in a situation in which we are not able to adequately fund student projects and student concerns. While programs like Athletics and the Honors Program are certainly valuable to students and worth funding, it's inappropriate for us the students to be the ones funding them. We need to focus our funding on our areas of specialty, our funding of student concerns and student-led projects.
Parking Lot
For example, one big area in which we've found a lot of student concerns is cars being damaged while parked in the parking lots. Often more than 50% of students will raise their hands in a classroom when asked if this has happened to them. A easy fix to this problem would be to install cameras in the parking lots to record the license plate numbers of any cars doing the damage to other cars. And we could do this relatively inexpensively, but due to so much of our budget being devoted to basic college services that we have no direct oversight over, even this system would be difficult for us to put in place.
The DASB Senate has the potential to be an "idea lab", a place where students can come to have their ideas funded. If you want to create a new piece of art on campus, go on an educational trip with other students, our start a new student service on campus, the DASB Senate should be a place where you know you can go to seek funding for your idea.
