WHITESBORO — Dashboard Nixon wants you to see something you’ve never seen before.
That’s why bassist Jeff Moyer has no problem slipping into a black jumpsuit to sing covers from ’80s chick band Heart.
“It’s natural,” said Moyer. “I’m an idiot.”
The band — which includes Moyer, Gary Johnson (guitar/vocals), Patrick Orlowski (drums), Keith James (keyboards) and the occasional vocals from Molly Schlotterer — is set to perform Saturday, March 21, at Route 69 Steakhouse.
The band members said that the antics are only one small part of the band, however.
They’ve each come from various local and regional bands such as Gridley Paige, Cosmo, and Morning After and say that they take the music and the business of making that music seriously.
That means preparing their music for a wide variety of audiences – from senior citizens to 12-year-old birthday girls.
“If we’re at a place like McGill’s, we’re gonna have an adult show,” Johnson explained.
“If we’re at Harpoon Eddie’s on the deck, it’s like 4-year-olds and their parents … so you have to be prepared.”
The band’s repertoire primarily consists of popular covers from ’80s and early ’90s groups such as B-52s, Toto and REO Speedwagon — the songs you thought you’d never hear again, but are glad you did.
That collection of songs naturally appeals to a range of listeners, but the band can’t ignore the bar-goers and what they want to hear.
“The demographic going to bars is not 18-year-olds sneaking in a beer,” Johnson said. “It’s 30-somethings coming from work looking to remember that song they heard in their basement 15 years ago.”
Sometimes being prepared means not being prepared, though.
“You never know what kind of audience is in front of you,” Orlowski said, adding that the band rarely prepares a set list and often takes requests from the audience.
Generally, they already know the song, and if they don’t, they’ll learn it for their next performance

April- 27th- UTICA OD- This was a pretty kick-azz weekend for local music, but I have to give you all a heads-up about one particular band — Dashboard Nixon. I interviewed these boys in March and immediately loved them for their fun, quirky, good-time sense of humors. I found out those traits carry to the stage after seeing them live this weekend.
If you want a party (and I did this weekend), this is the band to make it happen. From Toto to Michael Jackson to Van Morrison, the guys played the stuff you forgot you wanted to hear but jump up and down and “woooooo” when they remind you.
They’re all pieces of former popular local bands Gridley Paige, Cosmo and Morning After, but sound brand new.
OH!! Watch out for the occasional guest vocals from Molly Schlotterer who sang a version of Evanescence’s “Call me When You’re Sober.” This chick sings with a power that’ll make you notice – no matter how many Utica Clubs you drank. Hands down, one of the best female vocalists I’ve heard in the area since I’ve been on the scene.
You definitely want to make this band a part of your rounds of summer sounds. They’ll be at Route 69 Steakhouse in Whitesboro Saturday, May 2.
