How many artists can actually boast of winning a Grammy Award before releasing their debut album? Ricco Lumpkins aka Da SoundsCan accomplished that feat in 1998 when he took home the prestigious award for producing “If They Knew” off of TLC’s multiplatinum album Fanmail. Now with the release of his debut album Conception 2 Life, Lumpkins is looking to charter familiar award-winning territories.
“Winning the first Grammy was surreal, but it all happened by coincidence,” Lumpkins says. “The song that I did was suppose to be on Left Eye’s solo album but Dallas Austin heard it and requested it for Fanmail.”
Lumpkins’ career as a songwriter, producer and engineer took off afterwards as he worked with the likes of OutKast, Lauryn Hill, Ciara, Curtis Mayfield and Sammie. The experience of working with established artists and having Austin as an advisor and mentor helped Lumpkins in the creation of his solo debut. “My album is across the board because I was able to bring a lot of what I learned together,” he says. “But I chose to release it independently so that I would have more control over the process.” His vision was apparently effective because the album is nominated in eight different categories in this year’s Grammy Awards.
Lumpkins believes that his album will represent a return to creativity in hip-hop and R&B. “I love the way hip-hop has made the transition and I think good songs are coming back,” he states. “I know that good music is something that can last forever.”
