Dating Godot was founded in 1992 by one of New Zealand's most prolific songwriters, Andrew Spittle. Along the way several other artists have joined him on his records, but Andrew has always been the backbone of the band. Known for his fuzzy guitar licks, unpolished vocals, and DIY recordings, Andrew is never at a loss for great lyrics or melodies. He has often been criticized for his less-than-perfect voice, but his vocals are part of what makes his style so appealing. His music is unique and always has a raw, lo-fi edge, although in New Zealand I have heard him compared to The Verlaines. Being that they're both from Dunedin, the city that brought us the "Dunedin Sound" in the early 1980's, it's easy to draw comparisons. When Dating Godot formed, The Verlaines, Tall Dwarfs, Straitjacket Fits, The Clean, The Chills, and many of the artists that were integral to that scene, were still playing venues in Dunedin. The "sound" that Dunedin was famous for was still just coming down from it's heyday.
I had the privilege of being a part of this band and put my two cents worth in on the recordings "Everyone Is Leaving" and "Nights Through Your Window." Nigel Duncan joined us on the latter with his history in punk and heavy metal bands and his riveting drum beats. "Nights..." was the only recording that involved a collaboration between musicians. I wrote "Aerial"and co-wrote "Face of an Empty Room." Nigel also wrote for that record.
There has been a lot of talent involved in whatever lineup Dating Godot has comprised, and most of the musicians who are not with the band anymore are still active. Probably the most well-known of the group is Robbie Yeats who also played with The Verlaines and, more recently, The Dead C with Bruce Russell and Michael Morley. Victor Billot is another notable musician from the New Zealand band, Alpha Plan. He currently has some great solo work that you can listen to right here on myspace. Jeremy Taylor is a fine guitarist/vocalist who is currently working solo, but is also known for the critically acclaimed band Cinematic.Piers Graham's recent work is with the band Deja Voodoo, Jesse Booher is currently with Looma, and Aaron Plimmer plays with the funky, hip-hop group Master Pilot.
It has taken years to get Dating Godot's music out into the public - I know one day all this old stuff (and the new) will get pulled out of hiding to be shared with the world. With almsot 20 cds worth of great songs on Andrew's own Delerious Records label, it's really too bad that Dating Godot still remains one of New Zealand's best kept secrets - well, maybe not anymore.
