Some stories are just meant to be told. The stories that inspire people, communities, movements. Such is the case with Trigga - young, aggressive, and heartfelt, Trigga makes you feel his story. Trigga embodies the classic American dream - from nothin' to somethin' - and a whole lot in between.
The cold streets of Baltimore, Maryland provide the backdrop to Trigga’s life. Trigga’s turbulent childhood was highlighted by his unforeseen independence - his father dying of a heroin overdose, and social services taking him away from his mother. “By the time I was 12, I hadn’t seen my mom or my sisters in seven years…I didn’t know if they were dead or alive.”
By age 16, Trigga was on his own path - determined to make somethin' from nothin'. “I used to ride three miles on my bike, to and from school,” he recalls. “I really wanted to find out my identity, who I was. I heard Lil’ Wyte rapping - and it sounded like the life I was living. I was a drug user at the time, I felt he was talking to me. I stole a boom box with a mic and a cassette player, and would records raps all day and night.”
In 2006, after a two-year stint in the Navy, Trigga was focused, disciplined, and back in Baltimore. Now focused on rap, a brief reconciliation with his mother had another profound effect on his life. “We had an argument - she tried to stab me. I realized I’d never known who I was. Living paycheck to paycheck, group home to group home, I was messed up - music was the only good thing in my life.” Trigga took this as a sign to make music the mark of a new beginning.
The foundation of Trigga’s music is his majestic story - often times heartbreaking, it's the classic story of the American dream. Now the CEO of Datwunz Productions, Trigga’s own top-tier studio helps put his artists on a similar path to success. Earlier this year, Trigga began gaining recognition as one of Baltimore’s most prominent up-and-coming artists, gaining local radio play on 92 Q Jams, as well as being nominated for two Blammy’s: Best New Artist and Spit Fire (Best Battle Rapper).
Reflective and optimistic, Trigga’s passion is evident in his music. The instrumental of ‘When I Think of You’ is contrasted by Trigga’s strong desire to succeed - “I’ve hit rock bottom a few times…music is really a gateway for people like me to know that, with dedication, you can go far in life - even if you come from poverty.” Unabashedly human, Trigga draws the audience into his music, his life, his thoughts. ‘Everyday Struggle’ finds Trigga laying his heart onto the track, with both undeniable passion and brutal honesty.
2008 being his breakout year, Trigga looks forward to keeping the momentum going in 2009. “I’ve been in the rap game 3-4 years, but it feels like my journey’s been 10-15 years long.” Trigga is currently gearing up the release of his latest mixtape, Major Without a Major Deal. Scheduled for a February 2009 release, Major Without a Major Deal is designed to provide further insight into Trigga’s life, and his recent successes as well. “The idea of success is what I yearn for. Money in my heart, love in my pocket - I was born with nothing, but I’ll die with everything.”
