Interests

  • General

Short films provide a great opportunity to communicate something uniquely personal with an audience. Vernic
was an opportunity for me to let of steam from the deadening bureaucracy that irritates and frustrates us all from time to time. "Riffs of Rage" was simply a homage to the brilliant Warner Brothers shorts that me, Nathan Walster and Duncan Gamon grew up watching. Duchy Parade Film's cinema short "Wilfred" gave me and a group of talented Irish artists the opportunity to paint our picture of the horrors of war in 'strange meeting'. I like working up story ideas fast with post-it notes. In this page for Riffs of Rage the customer wants to go to the top floor and the bell-boy can't reach the button.
  • Music

Animation still for Duchy Parade Films music video, "Spirit of the Age" for the Space Rock band Hawkwind. For Dave Brock's lead vocals about cloning we used traditional drawn animation evoking imagery of 'Dolly' the cloned sheep. .. Music was central to the short film "Riffs of Rage". Individual lightning frames provide the visual accent to a riff from the great Raymond Scott.
  • Movies

Drawn SFX animation for the "Thunderbirds" movie title sequence. Nexus Productions. This special limited edition poster was designed by Nexus directors, Smith & Foulkes. Click to see pencil-tests for Thunderbirds
I had the time of my life learning under some of the best in the business and animating many of the effects for "Tiggers Family Tree" song sequence at Tandem Films. I saw some great concept art for this film so it was a shame that, for whatever reason, it didn't fully trasfer to the screen. I only did a few shots and am proud to say I nearly killed Tiny Tim with a bucket of ice cold water! ..
  • Television

.. I did these designs for "Wide Eye", based on one of their animators drawings for King Rollo Films for CBBC. I also contributed rough story sketches for "Little Hoot learns to fly". I really enjoyed creating this company branding animation sequence for TV company Voodoo Magic. I was an effects animator on Ignacio Ferrara’s darkly comic film, How to cope with Death" produced at Tandem Films as part of Channel 4's AIR scheme. It won numerous international animation awards and features in The Best of the British Animation Awards DVD 5.
  • Books

.. A famous animation producer once told me that a property like "Little Monsters" only comes along every decade. Tony Garths books are great. I really enjoyed helping to create a second series of books at Splash based on Tony Garths characters. These lot are the originals. My art in print! Water fx animation for "Christmas Carol - The Movie" which made the picture book.
  • Heroes

All the unsung teachers I meet who perform small miracles every day, without notice, and the children and young people who inspire me with their creativity and zest for life. ..

About me:

I am passionate about animation. I shot my first film when I was 9 with a super 8 cine camera and at 16 persuaded Orchid Productions to let me loose doing sound breakdown and working in the camera room on "The Raggy Dolls", on top of animation and drawing tuition from the brilliant Mark Mason. My first paid job in animation was as a trainee at King Rollo Films, inbetweening, rendering and doing anything that needed doing. An Internship in Visual Effects at Walt Disney Feature Animation, France, during training at Senior College Ballyfermot in Dublin changed my artistic outlook profoundly and gave me the break to enter the sfx animation community in London. I've since worked around the UK, doing a lot of exciting jobs and am presently based in Yorkshire - Ooo-argh. As well as working in the industry in feature films, TV and as an independent animator, I pass on my enthusiasm about animation through teaching. Nothing beats seeing young people become exited by animation like I am. I am a member of the ASIFA children’s workshop group and teach 3 year old to adults and am committed to furthering the advancement of animation as an educational tool.

Who I'd like to meet:

Friends, animators and animation fans. All are welcome here!
