David Cate is a diverse improvisational keyboardist with footsteps that cross jazz, rock and experimental music. A life-long musician with many bands and songwriters, I began my career in Nashville from a family of musicians. Elton John changed my preference for the guitar in the eighties and after an affair with the piano, I never turned back.
Many bands through high-school including Infinity, Tenpenney, Sullivan Central Jazz Band. Performed in the East Tennessee State University Jazz band and educated by Dr. Jim Stafford, Bill Canny and Charlie Goodwin, I fell in love with jazz.
My love for music turned me toward radio in the late eighties and I worked for WKPT, WQUT and WZXY. I left radio for newspaper and have worked in advertising and marketing for twenty plus years. I am currently the New Media Director for The GoTriCities Network and develop regional website networks for this association of media companies and commercial clients in East Tennessee.
In addition to my day job, I have performed with several artists and bands including, The Watch, Ahab and The Wailers, Blue Ridge Jazz Ensemble, Reagan Boggs, Josh Green, HeadEast, Lee Greenwood, Ralph Emery, John Cowan and many others. My current project is an avant-garde funk and jam band named CLEAR with Jared Bentley, Greg Smith, Lance Mccloud and Willie Simpson.
I'm honored to have been the first myspacer to hear your Hall & Oates cover! Great lick at 3:07 by the way...Hope you're doing well brother. Talk to you soon. cp
Dave! I'd love to make it Saturday night to see you guys, but I have a "thing" I have to do beforehand. Hopefully I can make it out there to see you guys rock the NFAC!
Hi David. Thanks for the add! It's been a long time since we were in Band at Sullivan Central High! Those were good days my friend. Anyway, God bless you always! Ray
Mr. Cate, I just heard some freaky stuff. I was listening to Absolutely Curtains on Obscured by Clouds on I-tunes when i happened across your page and O Christmas Tree began playing right along. Crazy stuff. You should try it. Anyways, I have a proposal for you. A series of tribute shows this spring and summer, you and I and whoever else would like to, Maybe Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Zappa, Elton John, and whoever else. If you like the ideal get back to me. Would love to make some music with you again and it would be great fun, and great money too if we promote it right. Maybe one show a month. I'll give Jared and Greg a shout. I think they may be interested if they are not too busy. Give me a shout sometime 434-2995. Later,
