He’s also done an extensive study of world music throughout his life. They’ve released two CD on Southport Records-Tenrdils of Light and Ganesh. These present ensemble includes Dan Hesler (saxes and flute), Donn De Santo (acoustic and electric bass), Heath Chappell (drums) and Aras Biskis (world percussion), with bassist Steve Hashimoto appearing on Tendrils. The CD’s also include additional musicians on tabla (Yatindra Vaid), world percussion (Hamid Drake, Michael Zerange, Ken Gueno)and Indian flutes (Lyon Leiffer). Flippo’s composition aims to blend various aspects of jazz with world music styles from all over the world—oftentimes venturing into uncharted territory. These world music styles that have been incorporated to date include African, Middle Eastern, Greek, South American, Irish, Romanian, Reggae, Indonesian, Japanese, Indian, Pakastani and Afro-Cuban. The CD’s also include several contemporary American jazz tunes. While some pieces are contemplative others are built upon driving grooves.
