I am an artist and film maker based in London. I have recently graduated from the Fine Art course at Sheffield Hallam where I worked in what could loosely be called documentary film. A large part of my work uses video cameras to explore the way people relate to one and other through looking. I am interested in the catalytic quality of the video camera and the way people adapt their behavior in its presence. I enjoy watching people pose awkwardly for photographs while the camera man attempts to operate the flash.
Johnny Lowe & Alec is a documentary film about the ventriloquist Johnny Lowe and his doll
Alec. The film uses the ventriloquists ability to throw his voice to explore the conventions of documentary voice-over. A variation of this film will be shown as part of a video installation at the newly opening Supplement gallery in Bethnal Green. An extended version of this documentary will also be avaliable at the show.
wall film
Continuing the experiments into the monotonous nature of video art, which he began in ’Boring Video’, in 2007 Dave Green started to film brick walls. He sets up his camera on a tripod in front of the nearest wall and waits until someone approaches to ask him why he is filming a wall. His response is usually one of indifference allowing the passer by to offer up their interpretation of the situation. Insightful and occasionally amusing these offerings become the content of the film.
Life In the Bus Lane
In ’Life in the Bus Lane’ Dave Green attempts to mirror the movements of a Sheffield city bus along a busy high street. Although taking on the role of performer the the act of filming remains at the heart of the process.
Boring Video
’boring video’ is a meditation on the occasionally boring nature of video installation. It is a text-based piece which plays with the uncertain viewing time videos are allocated in the gallery setting. It constantly apologizes for not being interesting enough and begs the viewer to go and look at something else. The possibility that something more will happen is built up but never satisfied. The viewer waits uncomfortably for a punch-line that never comes.
