Influences
Van Morrison, Rickie Lee Jones, John Hiatt, Nick Drake, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello ---however, those fine artists only represent the most obvious and one such as I beieves that we are all infected, infused, confused and diffused by many sources such as.....Kandinsky, Albright, Miro, Klee, Jack, Dada, Modigliani, Monk, Hesse, Kundera, Sedaris, Django, Monet, Miles motherfucking Davis,Tal Farlow, Jim Hall, Dave Grisman, Tiny Grimes, John Doe, Mingus, Young Fresh Fellows, Dinah Washington, Henry Threadgill, Art Farmer, Ben Webster, Ornette Coleman, Coleman Hawkins, Cannonball, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Jimmy Shirley, Jim Roll, Brian Lillie, Sari Brown, Stan Getz, Jobim, Art Tatum, Grant Green, X, Dave Alvin, The Paladins, early T-Birds, Otis Rush, BB, Gatemouth, Jimmy Reed, The Kronon Quartet, Astrud Gilberto, Los Lobos, Nick Lowe, Maria Callas, Lambert Hendricks and Ross, Ben Folds, John Mayer, Gato Barbieri, Horace Silver...........all so great....and so many more.
It is silly to even try and list them all.
Sounds Like
Van Morrison, Nick Drake, John Hiatt, Elvis Costello
Currently playing in two fine ensembles - Pitchy and the 44’s and Just Another Bird.
Just Another Bird is an original ensemble playing original songs and odd covers - Dan Smolla on Guitar, The Lovely Miss Juli on Vocal and myself on Bouzouki, Mandolin and Zither.
Pitchy and the 44’s play some of Dave’s originals but mix in a lot of other off-beat oddities. Rick Fazio on Electric and Slide Guitar , Steve Brownstein on Washtub Bass, Dave plays guitar and anything else he can find in his bag of tricks.
At times Pitchy and the 44’s are lucky enough to serve as back-up to poet Dean Hacker.
I hope everyone can come to my going-away show before I move to Vermont! I need you all there to help me create a Joyful Noise and a Big Love to vibrate all around us & send up to heaven.
Even more importantly, this is a benefit for an awesome organization called Re-Member, which is providing crucial humanitarian aid as well as engaging in healing cultural exchange with the Oglala Lakota people of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Pine Ridge is the second poorest county in the US and has the lowest life expectancy outside of Haiti in the western hemisphere. It is time to stop ignoring the horrible injustice our Lakota brothers and sisters have experienced and continue to experience today, and I hope you'll join us in doing all that we can to stand by them. Please click here to see a video about Re-Member's work on Pine Ridge.
