Biography:
Today……
David enjoys playing improvised music in the Poetiks with Nancy Bullis and Micheal Morse, directing the Westdale High School Senior Jazz Band, jamming with members of AIMT in Toronto, and travelling Canada as a piano examiner and workshop facilitator with Conservatory Canada.--------------------------
David began his jazz career 30 years ago in Northern Ontario clubs in and around North Bay. After finishing their regular gig, the band would hurry up to Larocque Sugar Shack for a few after hour sets. With smell of ribs creeping from the kitchen, folks would pack the place, the smoke grew thick, and we would play until the sun came up.--------------------------
Next stop, the speakeasies of Western Australia. With Fender Rhodes and ARP Synthesizer in hand, a wonderful year was spent performing in “Cravings” and other late-night jazz joints. No telling the influence of Aussie Beer, Thai food, the hot sun, and a billion flies would have on the future development of a career.--------------------------
Further travels……
Boston and Berklee College of Music. This is where is started to come together. Pursuing a degree in Jazz Composition, successfully achieved Cum Laude 1982, by day, David continued performing at night. Highlights: Forming a synthesizer ensemble at Berklee, a musical residency in “Tinkers”, as one half of the opening act, 6 nights a week, 12 sets. 72 shows, Me, Bee: leader/singer/comedian/impersonator, and a body guard, an education. We opened for Chris Connors, Betty Carter, Woody Shaw, and Ester Phillips.--------------------------
Back to Canada……
Formed a quartet with legendary saxophonist D.T. Thompson, bassist Jack McFadden, and drummer Bill Graham. This is where it came together. D. T. and the boys helped David sort it out, jazz wise. Deep swing, simple chords, the primacy of groove, repertoire. From there other groups were born and a career was launched.--------------------------
Next stop……
Co-founded the Canadian Youth Synthesizer Orchestra, 6 years with exceptional teenage musicians, synthesizers, concerts, recordings, and music festival tours. Concerts at Ontario Parliament Buildings one July 1st, Premier David Peterson officiating, music festivals in Ontario, Massachusetts, New York, and California. Imagine 10 synthesizers, 2 drummers, and saxophone. By far the most creative undertaking yet. The music: Early and late electronica, jazz fusion, classical collaborations with the Hamilton Youth Synthesizer Orchestra, and Latin Music. One of our musicians won a full Berklee College of Music Scholarship (now completed); many others began their now successful careers here..--------------------------During the 1990’s I had the pleasure of forming Mediterraneo, a New Age Latin Jazz outfit. A big hit in Burlington clubs and later we worked extensively in the Toronto Special Events industry. With this group I had the good fortune to work with Toronto’s finest musicians.
