I was born in Berkeley and raised in El Cerrito, California. I began collecting vinyl at the great record shops and flea markets of the San Francisco Bay Area. I was interested in old soul and funk breaks that were being mined for hip hop samples. Around the time I was coming of age, the warehouse and rave scene took off in the Bay. I found the all night parties irresistable, and fell in love with house music. I dj'd for a friend's warehouse party
with a $60 gemini mixer, 2 random record players, and 3 crates full of vinyl. It was love. Soon after that I bought my Technics 1200 decks on credit and started throwing house parties with my roomates. Hip Hop was huge at these parties, but I was drawn to the acid disco sound of San Francisco. On a trip to in New York City, I got an earful of the post Paradise Garage soulful house scene, and the jazz soaked Giant Step parties, and was blown away. I moved to NYC in 1993 and dj'd a few house parties. Soon, I began a residence at Cafe Tabac, followed by a 5 year stint at Wonder Bar, and a 5 year run at Starlight.
I have developed my style over these years, and spin both uptempo and downtempo sets. I call my uptempo style Motherfunky, and incorporate soulful and funky house, two step, nu jazz, broken beat, and any other style of dance music with soul. I only dj with vinyl records.
I host my mixes on my own site due to copyright issues. Here is a link to my latest mix. Be sure to right click and "save as" or "download linked file". Click to Download DJ Dave Trouble - Spillway - 2006.mp3
