  • Bio

With his deep soulful voice, rock-solid rhythms on amplified acoustic guitar, incredible range of tunes from every decade of the rock and blues era, and songwriting that tells every human story, Davey J is a one-of-a-kind musical talent in the Midwest. If you have seen him live, you know about his relaxed but passionate stage presence and musical personality. He is equally at home strumming and singing by a fireside or rockin' a rowdy crowd from a big festival stage. He performs live as a solo artist and as bandleader for Davey J and the Jones Tones, a veteran band of four musicians, all with a distinctive style and personality that blends into a powerful whole. Their music ranges from urban and country blues to 50s and 60s rock and roll, old country with soul, and a jam band sound that brings you from the past to the present. It's always a foot-tappin' jammin' and relaxin' time when you see the Jones Tones live. Sixteen years and counting - the Jones Tones continue to bring the best in American roots and popular music to your stage. Davey J is now working on his fifth CD, "Visions," which should be completed this spring. His last solo CD, "Hippie Child," shows his musical versatility as an artist - be sure to pick it up onstage, or to purchase a track from CD Baby. As bandleader for the Jones Tones, Davey J has completed two CDs. The first one is "Jones Tones Featuring Davey J," from a fine crew of urban folk friends in Minneapolis. The other is called "Bridgewater Blues," and it is all about the Eau Claire Blues. A third CD is available with tracks from Davey J's performances in the 1990s, when his band was called the Parsley Brothers, and it is called "What is the Meaning of Parsley?" The music on this site is all original music from several of Davey J's CDs. Enjoy!
  • Members

Catya, John LeBrun, Duffy Duyfhuizen and Davey J are the core of the band today. The original members were Mike McIlhon, David Tousley, Matt Yetter, and Davey J. Other past and present crew members are Evan Middlesworth, Laura Sommer, Adam Winrich, Tom Grant, and Kari Tauring.
  • Influences

Blues influences include Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, Ry Cooder, Slim Harpo, Elmore James, Ray Charles, and Muddy Waters. Other influences include old-time rock and country players such as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, Buddy Holly, and Ricky Nelson. Rock influences include the all-time greatest jam band, the Grateful Dead, and melodic rock acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, the Beatles and the Who. I admire the work of more edgy rock acts too such as Lou Reed, Tom Waits, and the Violent Femmes, and you can also hear the reggae influences of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, King Yellowman, and the Clash. Finally, of course, there's a little bit of soul in our sound - we follow in the big footsteps of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, the Temptations, Etta James, Bill Withers, Al Green, and so many more!
  • Sounds Like

No other band sounds exactrly like us - but we speak the musical languages of classic blues, jam bands, soul bands, reggae bands, and some of those hot guitar pickers from back in the day!
