    First I Dreamt the Journey

I am passionate about the journey.

That I have travelled from the very dark place I was at in 1989 to where I am today is a source of constant wonder to me.

Active addiction is a very dark place.

The journey for me is the journey of recovery.

    My new book -

    First I Dreamt the Journey

    - an uplifting fairy story in prose, is an exploration of that journey

"Picking up, and developing on, the themes raised in his first book - Walking into Eternity - David explores further the journey in a series of dream like sequences which allow the reader to reflect on their own journey, whilst, at the same time, drawing inspiration from his words. The chief narrator in the book is an old man who utilises his own experience to guide a younger companion, and the reader, through his struggles in the Battlefield of life. He expounds on the benefits of visiting the Cave of Truth and demonstrates the safe places of the Stepping Stones and the Kitchen, He highlights some of the Signposts for the journey. Perhaps, most importantly, he introduces us to his own mentor - The Beautiful Fairy. It is she who introduces us to some magical places and lights for us the never-extinguishable Torch of Hope. Altogether an enchanting experience for both the young man and the reader which not only informs and educates but also provides inspiration. Printed on re-cycled paper. Produced in a size suitable for the pocket or the handbag, this book provides a resource which can be kept readily available."

  • Music

I am a product of my generation - Rock and Roll is king
  • Movies

This is not about films - This is about places.

My favourite place is Whitby, a small town on the east coast of Yorkshire in England.

Although Whitby is on the east coast a quirk of the coastline means that it faces north.

Around mid-summer the sun both rises out of the sea and sets in the sea.

    Quite wonderful.

The muse works for me when I am in Whitby and a number of my poems have either been inspired by Whitby or written in Whitby.

The Walking into Eternity web site contains a number of pictures of Whitby allied to the poems.
  • Books

The book which made all the difference was

    "Staying Alive"

This was the book which made me realise that poetry had something to say to me.

About me:

"Evocative and full, David's poetry is the verbal equivalent of a slowly pulled pint in the heart of Belfast; rich, satisfying and the perfect way to round off a day."

My name is David Agnew and I write poetry.

That seems more real than saying I am a poet.

What I really think I am is a story teller - it just happens that the stories emerge in poetic form

And I know that poetry allows me to say things and express feelings that I was not able to say using prose.

My reason for being on Myspace is the same reason that drove the production of the book and CD - the desire to communicate.

My poetry was originally, and still is, written for myself.

However when I started to use it in the work that I do and realised that other people could relate, it became important to work out how to communicate with a wider audience. The book and CD was one way.

This is another.

My hope is that via this medium I will be able to reach out and not only make my poetry available to a wider audience but also find others who are using poetry to explore similar issues.

The poetry in the book was presented in a particular order with the intention of telling a story. My intention, in the blog section of this site is to put up poems as the muse moves me. Some will be from the book, some will be new, some will probably be works in progress. The blog will very likely also contain my rants and frustrations on this particular part of my journey.

And because I am delighted about the book - a plug -

The book and accompanying CD represent two things:

- the story of a journey

- a book of poetry

"One mans description of his experience on the journey presented in this form in the hope that it may be of assistance to and encouragement for those walking the same journey."

It has been described by Christina Hardyment (The Times Book Supplement 20th June 2006) as

"arresting reflections on his own journey through life"

Who I'd like to meet:

My favourite poets are -

Mary Oliver - because it was her poem "The Jouney" which leapt off the page, grabbed me by the throat and said "David, pay attention".

Wendy Cope - because of her ability to reduce things to the smallest number of words. Her "Defining the problem" sums up my entire love life in 34 words. I have seen this lady read live. She is well worth seeing.

Paul Durcan - a wonderful Irish poet with a completely off the wall take on things.

Alden Nowlan - because of his ability to take the mundane and make it somehow magical.

Sharon Olds - I have attended a workshop and a poetry reading by this lady - Truely inspirational

Hello clockface ( ref P.Durcan) and thank you for accepting my friendship.  I am a great admirer of Paul Durcan too and had the pleasure many moons ago to "win" a workshop he gave in Kerry.  It was marvellous and changed my perception of poetry! Looking forward to reading you.

    Hello David

Thank you for your friendship… Hope you enjoy my most recent blog:

    The Power of Impressions

If you are not being moved, touched during the day than how will the spirit awaken...

Yesterday, we were having very unseasonable warm tropical rainy weather here in Southern Oregon, mixed with a touch of winter. It felt very nice… pleasant. I did not have to think about it. You can say there was no me and that which I was enjoying. We were One.

The same principle that awakens nature and gives it life force also lives inside you and me. It is this connection if we give it our attention that changes our relationship for I come to realize that we are in this together.

It is when we are divided that conflict occurs and stops any impressions from coming in. It would be like the Earth telling the rain not today. I want to be barren. It sounds ludicrous but that is exactly what we do when we get negative.

Would it not make sense, instead of getting negative, that we have at our disposal the Beauty the Earth has to offer? All we have to do is look out the window and notice how nature is more vital than my anxious thoughts and feelings. It is better to have a relationship with our environment, that which is real and tangible than to live in a world of dreams.

It is when a person gets tired of going over the same old path and decides to take a different road. In spite of what it may cost them and so turn inward and listen to that small part that is the Heart of our Creator and little by little we begin to awaken to a whole new Understanding.

Thought has its place as far as learning a skill or remembering our next meeting but as far as having a relationship with the Devine only the Heart is capable because it represents in the physical plane our internal clock always beating second to second and reminding us to live in the Present moment. The only place anything true and good can be discovered.

I am grateful that nature is alwa
