David Brake and That Damn Band have been selected as the Best Vocal Group of 2007 at the Texas Music Awards ceremony on March 24. Check out all the details at www.texasmusicawards.com.
DAVID BRAKE & THAT DAMN BAND are a 4 piece combination of rock, country and blues Americana - but rather than combining these influences to make one sound, each song defines it's own genre.
Described as a rock band with a fiddle, Freeform Americana, or "Texas y'alternative," one thing is sure--they dont sound like anyone else. You can hear influences of Steve Earle, Wilco, Bruce Springsteen, Jack Ingram, Bruce Hornsby, Elton John, and The Beatles among others, and the instrumentation is unique (electric grand piano, fiddle, guitar, and drums).
The way I see it - if they laugh when they're supposed to laugh, think when they're supposed to reflect, and rock out when we blow the roof off the joint, then I'm doin' my job," says David Brake.
Although relatively new to the Houston music scene, David Brake & That Damn Band are already gaining a reputation. The group secured enough votes to gain two nominations in the Houston Press 2004 Music Awardsone for Best New Artist and one for Best C&W Band. They currently have a live CD of all new songs scheduled for release in 2006.
After years of playing piano and band gigs, David Brake set about recording his original songs and along the way formed the group that would later be known as That Damn Band (unknowingly named one morning by a neighbor who was disturbed by the drums). The result was the debut CD release Lean Mean Texas Machine--a collection of original songs reflecting his many influences. The CD made the Top 13 independent releases for 2003 in Texas Monthly (p.96, Dec.issue), the top 5 of the publishers picks in Texas Music Magazine, and ..2 of the local release picks of 2003 in the Houston Press. The title track was the Featured New Artist Track on the Official Texas Music Count-down syndicated across the Lone Star State, and other tracks from the CD received airplay on radio stations across the US and overseasincluding XM Satellites X-Country channel, where track 4 broke through the Top 30 for 3 weeks consecutively in 2004.
Although fans swear by this band, the music industry has ignored the group thus farand David Brake says he knows why. You have to go way underground to find us, because were such an enigma: jam band, yet singer/songwriter...orginal, yet cover...country one minute, then definately not. They dont know what to make of our what the hell is it from one song to the next mix but the audience likes the surprises. We definately do things our own way," says Brake.
That Damn Band is David Brake - vocals/piano/bass, Jeff Duncan fiddle/vocals, Steve Haygood- lead guitar/vocals, and Troy Nicar- drums.
